Holy Frak What I'm looking at is a weld? I could have sworn it was a small threaded screw hole.

I'm very sorry, I misunderstood your post. I thought you were considering "SHAVING" the OEM badges as well. If you were, the welds look like little indents about 1/2" to the side of the threaded holes.
Yes, those are threaded holes for attachment of the OEM tank badges.
FYI. The OEM tank badges are still available from Partzilla.com. I think they were like $16 each and MUCH less expensive than those people are selling on Evil-Bay for 3x++ as much to folks who don't know they can still be had from Partzilla.

KB, you're my hero. No, I'm trying for a bit of a "downfit" on my venturized 80. Restoring I guess, although she could hardly be called heavily customized. badges are a go. (not TO go) I hve ben ebay shopping, and thought the things must be awfully rare to be that kind of pricey. I just came back from another close look on me tank, and still dont see dimples, but i do see where the strip could have been spotted between the center and the two holes.Last edited by puskrat; 06-10-2016, 08:56 AM."Venturered" 80 XS1100G - "DoraMax" getting sort of resto/destro ed.
Yeah it's a pretty blue, but just because you're old is no excuse to buy a bagger. Fortunately I have wrenches.

Wow, I haven't bought badges off ebay but I had no idea they were still available from partzilla. My process for NOS, when I'm feeling flush and dumb, is to check Partzilla, then ebay to see if someone just bought a Yamaha lot and is clearing it out, and then SpeedNSport, which is not cheap but if one wants to spend the money on hard-to-find stuff, they tend to have stuff.
I did score a pair of brand new complete petcocks for the H tank I'm slowly rejuvenating for $19 apiece from a guy who had bought a ton of NOS. In the box. But otherwise very careful about buying new from there.
If I abandon the tank project I'll pass them along here.Steve R
