  • Atlanta Motorcycle Junk Yard Visit

    XS Folks,
Visited a junk yard this past weekend and wanted to cry!

At least 200 70's & 80's Yamahas in the yard...

There were AT LEAST a dozen XS/XJ 11's

The GEORGIA sun hasn't been too kind to most of these.

Fortunately, the yard has a DOZEN inside storage buildings where: Carbs, Seats, Tanks, Clusters, etc. are all stored. Basically the motors and frames are stored in the elements. Not too well organized inside but the owner can find anything you ask for.... heck of a memory!

DOZENS & DOZENS of Yamaha OEM fairings, Vetters, etc.

Made me want to cry seeing SEVERAL models I owned and loved including THREE Seca 650's. That was one of my all time favorites, before I got bit by the XS11 DUCKS.

Got a couple items for the Café bike and the prices were fair (not cheap and not over-the-top). We'll be going back in a couple weeks to get a complete R1 front end we're thinking of transplanting onto the Café..... Still thinking about that one....

Doesn't it just make you sick to see all these busted ole' Yamahas?

Here ya' go Mike (and all in the ATL Region). I'm not sure if the guy does internet sales.....

It's a little old shop and doesn't look like much from the front as you approach and I flew right by it on the way over. Once there, we talked nice and a young guy gave me a tour and let me & Nancy poke around the junk yard for quite a long while. The main guy/owner was very familiar with the XS1100 and it's 2nd gear issues....

I rummaged through a shed full of seats looking for something for the Café. Eventually settled on a Sportster seat in REALLY NICE condition ($50). I saw a couple of those XS11 standard seats with the rear fin and chrome bar on them on one of the shelves of seats. They have an ENTIRE shed full of nothing but carbs.... Pretty cool! All of the newer stuff is inside (R1's and similar style newer bikes of all makes & models)

Prices are NOT "cheap" but not really too out-of-line with common/normal Evil-Bay prices. I'd basically say the prices quoted were fair-ish and your holding the parts in your hands rather than looking at pics from the internet that are often deceiving.....

FYI.... I did ask for permission to take and post the above pics. I told the guys I would be posting to my XS11 club web-site.

        Sincerely,
        KURT

Thanks Kurt. Just added it to my contacts. Yards like that are good to have in your back pocket for the project machines that come our way.

The R1 forks are going to be way to short. Maybe an adventure bike might work. Speaking for myself, I'm too lazy to figure out all that geometry.

The Moto Guzzi Stelvio has leading axle forks. Finding a set might be a trick.

JunkYard Update - Purchase #2 - Good Deals!

              XS Guys,
We went back to this yard today looking for a couple items. Found one or two things:

I have to revise my price estimates a LITTLE bit. I picked (LITERALLY) through several boxes of Yamaha instruments and found this '79 XS1100 160MPH Speedo... Purchase Price $50. I believe I could have struck a much better deal on an 85mph, 120mph, 140mph as he has literally dozens and dozens of those. At $50 this was a heck of a deal as I've seen these get CRAZY CRAZY prices on the web.

I was also able to get a XS850 kick starter ($25), and four front brake caliper SS pad clips ($2).

The owner had me hunt thorough the parts boxes for the Speedo and I removed the kickstarter and SS clips. I spoke to him and asked if he did internet sales and he said that he does. I suspect the prices are going to be a little higher if he's pulling the stuff off or searching for it.

Seems like a reputable guy and has been in business in this location for many years. I would consider him trustworthy but would ask for a PIC of the parts before purchasing or sending money.

              Sincerely,
              KURT
