New old dude with a new to me xj1100 Maxim, picked it up cheap after 4yrs of heated storage, included a box of parts... carb manifold, brake pads, etc. PO had taken the side covers off and pulled the battery out... as far as he got. Ive pulled/cleaned the carbs and replaced the manifolds, kickstand safety switch had me confused for a day, but I had it out for a short test ride, front brakes are nearly non-existant but it seems pretty decent cond overall. No idea why I bought it, price was right tho, maybe the wife will want it once its cleaned up nice. I ride a '98 1100 Shadow.

Hey Lance,
Welcome, congrats on that find. The front brakes won't seem as strong with just the hand brake because it's only activating 1 caliper. The Footbrake controls both rear and the OTHER front caliper via a metered proportioning valve.
Watch out and don't get too upset when your SWMBO blows your doors off on a ride with "HER" XJ1100 !

Lol... ya the Shadow isnt a fast bike... but then my reaction time probably isnt as good as it used to be either so I'll stick with it. The Maxim came along because of my kijiji habit, similar to craigslist, I buy and sell alot of small engine stuff like garden tractors, snowmobiles, or whatever.... a guy called wanting to unload this bike cheap so I scooped it up. Might need a solenoid switch but I have a new batt coming so I'll wait until thats in, right now it will only click unless I jump the terminals. Prob start on the brake job next week. I didnt realize the pedal controlled one of the front calipers so learned something here already Cheers83 XJ11 Maxim Canadian

Myself, I am just wondering why we get a hello from Alberta, but a BC location on your profile? It makes quite a difference to those of us willing to lend a hand that are closer or not, to you.2-79 XS1100 SF

Hey Ras,
That may be my fault, when I register folks, I use the logged IP to lookup where they are, and sometimes the lookup site isn't as accurate because they only update their listings about every 6 months. Hopefully he'll see this, and then change his location in his profile if it's incorrect.?

Just fixed it now, were out in Sask this week dealing with some family issues so I havent been online much this pat week, but anyway... we live about 1/2 hr ne of Calgary, on an old farmstead near Irricana. The highway past our place goes thru some scenic red clay valleys and is a popular day trip for folks coming out from Calgary.
Should be home by mon-tues so I'll get started on the brake job by next weekend, seems like the PO had planned on doing them, bought the parts at least, but never got around to it. I dont expect any issues but ya never know.83 XJ11 Maxim Canadian

Made a little progress on this Maxim, new batt and soleniod installed, one petcock needed a new gasket inside behind the selector dial but that was included in the parts box. Ive only put about 40km on it so far but it seems to ride good and roll striaght down the highway, needs some minor electrical repair mostly due to brittle plastic plugs, still need to put in the new brake pads, change plugs, and do fluid changes. Im thinking I'll clean it up good over the winter and decide in the spring if we want to keep it or not.
I dont see an option to post a pic here? Does that have to be an offsite link?83 XJ11 Maxim Canadian

I really need to make an updated HOW TO tech tip in the HOW TO FORUM for this! Jerry posted one, but it is a bit confusing even for me, and I know how to !!
Okay, this web site doesn't store photos for posts, aside from the few in the tech tips that only the Moderators have access to for uploading! This was to keep operational prices down!
So...you have to be able to "link" to a photo stored on an internet server somewhere! Some folks have gone to places like PHOTODUMP.com, gotten a "Free" membership, and uploaded their photos there.
**Update: Photodump changed their direct linking policy, and won't allow it, you'll only get a thumbnail and the viewer will have to click on the link to go to the photodump to view the full size image!
Photobucket I believe still allows direct linking!?
PLEASE TRY TO FORMAT THEM in sizes of 640x480 or smaller to prevent sidescrolling of text in messages that will get WRAPPED as WIDE as the posted displayed photo!
Also, try to compress the JPGs to around 100K or less for faster uploading and displaying! When you upload your photo to the public server, after it gets loaded, with Photodump, you'll be given several strings of text....use the IMG string, copy that string... it's the URL code for where the photo is stored, put it into a text file for now! It'll look something like:
[ img ]http://www.photodump.com/gallery/bikephoto.jpg[/ img ]
Now, if your ISP provides you with Web Page storage, then you can use your own server once you get it set up with your ISP, you usually have to contact them, or go to your ISP's customer service web site, and "ACTIVATE" your web space, then you can create folders, and upload your photos there. Once you have uploaded them, then get the PROPERTIES or SHORTCUT/URL to the photos...again it'll look something like my photos URLs:
[ img ]http://www.cox.net/topcatgr/bikephoto.jpg[/ img ]
Now, open a reply or new thread, and where you want to photo to appear, either click the IMG button, then just paste the URL for each photo in that pop up window, and it will automatically be pasted into the message with the proper VB codes around it....
the [ IMG ] and [ /IMG ] without the extra spaces inside the brackets!! And then when you post the message, the FORUM will pull the photos from their urls and post them in the message for all to see!
I have turned off the AUTO Parse URLs codes so that you can see these VB codes....in the message you don't see them!
HTH!
PS.. Please, SD, don't keep posting about what I know, I don't know much, and I have gotten a lot of what I know from the real GURU's here on XS11.com, they really deserve the credit, I'm just active here(read I don't have a LIFE!)

Thx, other than one minor accident that I know of the bike is in decent shape, the PO repaired most of the damage and had the seat recovered, it rolls straight and feels good in the turns, tires are good, and it feels well balanced, at slow speeds its easier to control than my Shadow, I think the wife should ride it but she's abit scared of the power... I might just "tell" her Ive detuned it for her. Lol
Garden tractors are a required hobby of mine, I need them to maintain 14 acres so I buy/repair/sell them and keep the ones I like, the little Ford is a keeper thats been completely overhauled but still needs paint.
and I have a few guitars also83 XJ11 Maxim Canadian
