Fine line between aggressive and/or "skill" (if you must) and stupidity. I've crossed that line a few times. My bikes have the scars to prove it. lol.

Tod you have it and you have it bad I bet when you review on motorcycle video of the Ile of man TT races you can put yourself on the seat. Some guys here may not know what it feels like leaving the ground at over 100, the front wheel lifting going downhill but I bet you do.
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

I do, and at much, much more than 100 when I lived up in the Sierras. But that was back when I was young and dumb and full of... myself with 100 MPH reflexes and no t-shirt collection yet. I'm still dumb but no longer young and I have this huge! collection of t-shirts now so I try really hard not to do that any more!

I think I have posted this before.. terrible video, but the sound is there. Just a quick 25 to 100 mph run. You might be quicker with your stock air box, but you'll never sound this cool! lol. Not the quickest shifts, but was doing it clutchless holding the camera.

In the immortal words of Bernie Mac - "Nice... Reeeeal nice." I can't do quick shifts with Betsy - she needs a second to think about it. Probably the pods causing that.

I am not a fast rider by any means,I like to sit back and just cruise.I can handle curves alright but I got my 11 for the long haul and here it is 35 years later..it's in the garage and still in one piece

I didn't have much of a choice but to go with pods and the 4-1. I picked up my 80SG off Craigslist for $100. The PO was trying to turn her into a street fighter but realized he'd bitten off more than he could chew. I figured I could save the bike and turn it into something worth riding. There was no intake behind the carbs, and the exhaust was a 4-1 of unknown make. EVERYTHING aft of the first down tube behind the motor had been cut off at the down tube and swingarm pivot.
This is what I brought home.

This is what I'm riding to/from work daily, photos were before I put the pods on.

I do not like the 4-1 as there is only about 1 1/2 to 2 inches of ground clearance, so I'll be changing that this winter. These pipes are pretty beat up anyways.
I probably wouldn't have modified her if she hadn't already been hacked up. But I think if I hadn't saved her she'd have ended up in a wrecking yard or scrap heap somewhere.

Have fun with the pods, they aren't a problem for tuning any more than an airbox. Just have to know what you are doing with carbs in general and follow those that have gone before for a baseline set up. No need to re-invent something that has a known set up that works. While I don't have pods on my XS, I do on another bike and they make for a great intake sound!

Wow! I've heard of basket cases before - but never one that was actually in a basket. Nice job of resurrection!

Those 4/1's do look awful long and low. I'll bet you throw some serious sparks in a right hand turn.

Face to face I even throw in alot moreof both than here. But this site is designed for more normal speaking which I intend to lead to. Just cant resist throwin' in a bit of the added sarcasim. Just leave that all out cept for aa occassional laugh. Otherwise info itself is mostly correct in all seriousnness, even tho spelling sucks with a cast on one arm. BTW, took all my needed meds, so back on here for a bit,,,,,,hopefully without irritating to many of the herd.

Roncoach70, reading the introduction of ypours without reading any farther was enough for me. The stock Mikunis ARE designed to work with stock airbox, meaning the top diaphram assembly............unless you got WAY lots of experience with vacuum carb functions, which you do NOT have from reading your initial post. Trbig and a couple more do besides me, but not you. Stick with original airbox as that is what diaphram assembly IS designed to work with.

                                Hi motoman,
well ,yeah. For the short while when the bike was all shiny new and when it started acting up you were supposed to trade it for a new bike.
But that was 30 years ago.
                                But what's our mantra now?
Clean the carbs, clean the carbs, clean the carbs.
Well, buggrit, no matter what others may say, I found that the stock airbox is NOT easy to remove.
I got right miserable at the time, blood and bandaids involved.
So, pods for me, so there!
                                But which pods, eh?
Later reading showed me that pleated pods, tapered pods, pods with sheetmetal ends and collars that blocked the carbs' peripheral air intakes were not good.
So by sheer good fortune I fitted UNIpods which don't have those things.
And the bike ran just fine.
Then I was tempted by how nice the MikesXS tapered pleated pods looked with XS stamped into their ends and all so I swapped out the UNIs
                                in their favour.
I didn't notice any drop in performance using MikesXS pods because I ride like a timid old man.
But my son still rides like a maniac and he sez my bike don't have the top end it used to.
So never mind the looks, gonna swap back to UNIs as soon as I get 2 more to replace the 2 I put on my XS650.
