  • Sturgis rally

Howdy fellow XS'rs, we have a few members heading up to the Sturgis Rally from 8-1 to 8-6 in S.Dakota, if anyone is interested in meeting up or riding up to the rally, we are heading out of San Diego, through Vegas, Salt Lake City, Casper Wyo, then up to Sturgis. I know this is late as we leave friday, however....it would be very cool to see how the HD crowd reacts to our xs,xj bikes. So, let us know here if interested, otherwise wait for the ride report and pics................Mike in Sun Diego

The ratio of V twins to inline 4's will be about 5,000 to 1, IF your lucky. Most of the people will NOT see the XS/XJ for what they are, but the OLDER guy's WILL know the bikes, and appreciate them. This is from my trip though in 2006, a week before the "start" of the rally, but with a TON of bikes already in town.
Have fun, and ride safe!!! I'll be on an abalone dive August 1, so a no go for me.

When the boys and I went through in 2013, we enjoyed walking the strip and seeing the bikes and vendors. Did not really talk to anyone about our own bikes. Was proud of riding in though. There was an over abundance of "trailer queens" and too many shiny bikes never ridden.

Stay sharp. I had two HDs crash into each other at 20mph from too much looking and not enough attention in a slow traffic zone. Bodies and bags flying everywhere. No serious injury but keep a First Aid kit handy.

Everyone trips over my XS to see my buddy's customized Triumph. Like it's not even there...

But I specifically bought the bike "I" wanted so I'm not complaining.

Do have fun passing the HD's on the side of the road though. Wave hi for all of us...

I love Sturgis. I use to go every year when I lived in OKC/Shreveport. I use to race Flattrack there back in the day.

              You guys have fun.

Spent all week there, unfortunately my engine seized up the night we were supposed to leave so My wife and I took turns riding around on her 11 all week. Spent a day each in Sturgis, keystone, hill city ect. Stayed in the cabins at sylvan lake. Didn't see a single other XS the whole time....
I'm pretty sure that all of SD is a speed trap, the best example is spearfish canyon which is easily a 45-55 MPH road but is marked 35 the entire length, not that you can enjoy any twisties anyways with 200 harley baggers in front of you....

                            sturgis rally

Just a quick update on Sturgis,,,me, Roo and Steve all made it to Sturgis and had a blast. On the way back we stopped by to check in on Motoman and reporting that he looks great, just needs time to get the hip mobility and memory back to his old great self. Brant is a tough biker and has a lot of determination to get back in the saddle. The nurses about tackled him to keep him from jumping on one of our bikes as he tried to ride one for a quick spin. It was great to see Brant really coming around, his wife Anita is a gem and has been through a lot as we tried to help in our quick stopby. Thanks Anita for being there 110 percent for Brant. We quick cleaned his bike, The Bentley- 1980 Xs and it still looks great and hoping it stays that way until Motoman can ride again. As soon as I get off my butte I will get some pics out to post. Sturgis is unreal,,,1000 s of Harleys in every shape, age, detail. Sorry we missed PSychoreefer, but I did bring the Xj1100 as a lot of old riders checked it out and remembered the King Kong of bikes it was in its day.....The Bikini bike wash was about as wild as we saw in Sturgis, so not a lot of wild women to report, too bad for us. Roo and Steve were great riding partners as we left San Diego, through Nevada, Utah, Wyoming to South Dakota back through COlorado. Pretty good weather, a touch or rain and wind otherwise sunny and love the mostly 80 mph speed limits. Next year we have a few going up again, probably a week before Sturgis as its less crowded but same scene and vendors. Pics to come.....Mike in Sun Diego
