  • Weird Sounds

I've got several strange sounds my '79 XS makes, a weird one when starting, another rattlecan sounding one it makes in the console area (just put original style headlight/console on as it had a defunct set from a special someone had bolted on frankenstein style at some point. Not sure why they bothered as none of the gauges worked. Anyhow, I'm assuming this sound is one I created when hooking it up but not 100%)

I will get a video or audio recording of the sounds to demo and see if one of you guru's can ID them.

The starting one concerns me, as I changed all the fluids for the first time recently and it WASN'T making the 'squeal' sound before I did so... Not a squeal exactly, kind of an odd sound it makes sometimes when I try to start and it fails. sound slike it's coming from behind and to the left of my when I sit on bike.

    - Her ears flap when you get up to highway speeds...

    * Complete newb as far as attempting a restore, just couldn't pass her up after a test drive. She deserves better than whatever happened to her so far...
    * She's an "F".... More or less. has a pretty good mix of SF/F/?? Parts on her at the moment though.

You said you changed all of the fluids...with what type??

The starting sound you hear is the starter clutch down deep in the engine SLIPPING as it's not grabbing the starter shaft properly, and so slips around it instead. There are pinch rollers that are engaged when the starter motor spins the starter clutch assembly, but certain oils do not play well with the starter clutch...specifically SYNTH oils.

You say you replaced the gauges....did you use the rubber insulator rings that fit around the gauges before they set down into their chrome covers?
Also, there are supposed to be rubber caps on the end of the headlight ear pieces where they fit onto the fork tubes and the triple trees. There are also large rubber isolator washers that are used between the headlight ears and the headlight bucket and turn signal stalks. Lots of places for metal on metal vibrations to occur.
