  • Can one of you guru's tell me if this oil will work?

I haven't managed to locate any place nearby that carries things like the right kind/weight of oil for motorcycles - so I tried to be clever and purchased off amazon.com. It arrived today and when I unbox I see this:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ilpage_o01_s00

Which I did not notice before I ordered says 'Diesel Motor Oil' on it nice and bold. (You would think the picture of the Semi on it might have clued me in, but honestly I was trying to hurry and didn't even register to me what that was.)

ANYHOW - I have never seen/heard of Diesel motor oil before, and I don't know if that is just their target market or if the oil itself is different than what you would put in a car or bike. Can one of you guru's chime in and let me know whether this is safe to use - or if I need to exchange it for something else.

(I'm no mechanic, obviously - although I'm trying to learn!)

    - Her ears flap when you get up to highway speeds...

    * Complete newb as far as attempting a restore, just couldn't pass her up after a test drive. She deserves better than whatever happened to her so far...
    * She's an "F".... More or less. has a pretty good mix of SF/F/?? Parts on her at the moment though.

LOTS of commonly known brand oils have diesel specific ones also....but, not so much specific to diesels anymore either. 20-40w 'dino' of your choice is what MotherYammy specificly specified for these ole' air-cooled motors. NA for decades and replaced with 20-50w 'dino'(conventional) oil. if lower portion of spec. circle shows 'energy conserving', your clutch on the bike has a HIGH percentage of slipping. With 1500-2000mi. oil changes NECESSARY, a big waste of money that could be very well be used for fuel, Using ANY 'special' oil, that includes motorcycle specific IS and 'urban myth and total 'bunk'.
20-50w conventional(flavor of your choice) is all that been thru my XS.
But, then again, what do I know, only been 'feeding' conventional oil thru my XS for 33yrs. and the other listed ride for 11yrs. Never was, or has been an issue. If for some sort of reasoning you think you gotta' have 'motorcycle specific', WallyWorld carries Vavoline 20-50w motorcycle specific, as do ALL the common auto parts stores.

The API service stamp should look like this, blank at the bottom. Or, it should be motorcycle specific. 20w50 is what should be used in these bikes.

The soot control additives in diesel oil can cause issues too. Just saying.

Read here about the API doughnut on the back of the oil container and what it means.
            http://www.pqiamerica.com/apiserviceclass.htm

Do to tighter emmissions the amount of ZDDP in our oils have decreasing over the years. This is bad for our engines. If you can find API SJ or API SH rated oils use it. It has more ZDDP in the oil wich helpd with lubricity. Although many people use API SM oil I have considered just going to the dollar store and buying out all the API SJ/SL rated oil and use that from now on. If I can find API SH oil that would be about the best you can get.

              Not worht it

I decided it just wasn't worth messing with the purple juice. Went to Walmart - found the good stuff there.

I'll either ship the other stuff back to amazon or donate it to someone local...
