  • Anybody Carry Fuel Canteens for XS Rally Rides?

I know Marty and a few others have posted images of the "Gasolina" canteens for fuel. Have done a few Google searches and saw some are used for camp fuels, etc. Just wondering if anybody use them for the rallies coming from farther-away states? I believe the biggest size I've seen are 32oz, before them get into the square universal camping fuel canteens.

    Well,

The Biltwell Gasolina Fuel Bottle is actually 1.5 Liters, or just over 50 oz.

    $19.95 per unit on Revzilla:

    Biltwell Gasolina Fuel Bottle

If I ever do make it to one of our rallies, I'll definitely be tucking away a couple of these in my bags.

If you're east of the Mississippi and run out of gas. A bottle with 10 miles gasoline in it could make all the difference. As for our rallies, I've only attended XS East and Southeast, but fuel stops are planned for Eleven Specials. The issues we have are folks leaving out in the morning without a full tank or not fueling up at one of the stops because they weren't empty yet. With a group as big as XSSE, you get left behind. It just has to be. You go with the flow or plan your own ride. It's best to get familiar with the route in case of emergency potty break or mechanical failure.

As for a ride from MI to NC, that little gas bottle may certainly ease your mind when the fuel gets low and you don't know where the next town is. You should be fine without it, but......

The SEAFOAM bottle contains gasoline. I would prefer a purpose built bottle for safety.

Hold on a minute. Consider the explosive power of gasoline. That Biltwell bottle is a safety device. It's designed to tuck into a tank bag or pannier. The plastic jug is not. That being said, this is how most of us do it.

I actually will not put the trunk or bags on the bike for either trip (notice how I avoided saying "riding naked, lol"). So, I think I will probs buy that canteen from Revzilla. Thanks for the link Mike!

... And exactly what is wrong with riding naked? (Well, almost naked, anyway)

I've never seen any need to carry extra fuel, not even out this direction. Back in eearly 1980, on a 'borrowed' bro-inlaws Honda 650-4, two-up from Durango,CO. to Flagstaff,AZ, fartherst thing from my mind was worrying bout fuel, and was never an issue. But it DID make the decision for me that I NEEDED the biggest, badest scoot out there on the market. Hence the Venturer 1100 in '81. Alot of you HAVE been across that fairly deserted stretch, and know what I mean. Carrying a pre-charged malotof-coctail aboard either of my bikes...hell will freeze over first....unless it's to rescue ANY rider less fortunate. On the ST(SuperTanker), I carry a bulb pump syphon at all times JUST for the less fortunate.

                  My 2 cents,

That Sea Foam can is aluminum, but has a much thicker wall than just a regular soda can or such, so it would take a serious "hit" for it to rupture. Granted, I wouldn't have it mounted exposed on the side of the bike, but up in/on some bags/rack would be my preferred location to reduce the chance of impact!

Secondly, until it leaks to at least half empty, it won't have enough room for a proper air/fuel ratio to actually explode if ignited....per a Mythbuster's episode where they showed a vehicle with a leaky fuel tank, and they lit the trailing gas on fire....even when the fire caught up to the vehicle, it just burned on the outside and didn't explode.

One XSSE rally I attended was during the Hurricane induced fuel shortage on the mountain stations....and I went out to the next town for something, and essentially got lost....was totally dark, and I just kept going over one hill to the next, etc., and the evil low fuel red light came on. I thought I was going to get stuck out there, but made it back to the camp/lodge safely.

I know if I was going to be crossing the western states, I wouldn't hesitate to carry an extra fuel container.

I have one of these that fits perfectly in my saddlebag along with 2 quarts of oil, a couple rags and the wrench for my seat. The other bag has my tool kit and first aid kit with room left over.

Ran out of gas 1 time in the middle of nowhere Oklahoma. Ain't doing it again.

If I were coming to the rallies dressed, I would carry a bigger can. However, all I'm bringing is a backpack.

For long cross country rides out west like my 7k trip in 2013 I bought 2 of these:

                        http://m.ebay.com/itm/221729105642?nav=SEARCH

They are 2.2L each. Quality made in Germany. The red spout stores inside the lid to make it pourable.

For riding in the east I might only carry one.

Around town I used to keep a Seafoam bottle of fuel in a small toolbag on the forks. Enough to get a few miles to a station if you push too far.

The guys from TheFullRide.com I met in Colorado on their 25k mile trip had extra cans setup like this:

Of course they were going to Alaska and need long range.
