  • Will be new Owner tomorrow!! What to look for on test ride???

Well tomorrow i will be picking up a 79 xs1100 special. the owner says it is completely restored with no issues. I will bring money to take on test ride and see how it goes. I have a few pictures. Can you guys help, and let me know what i need to look for? I figure a nice 10 minute ride should get all the kinks out and reveal things i need to know. Bike has about 29k miles.

    any help would be appreciated.

I can send some photos of bike to anyone that could help me out

There are two FAQs off the main page to help.

    When buying:

    After buying:

    Good luck!

Add the photos to photobucket or some other hosting site then link them here. The more eyes, the better.

On your test ride, firmly shift into second gear after you get it rolling a bit. Give the throttle a good twist. If 2nd gear holds, the rest is gravy.

Look for the obvious leaks, etc. Check the date code on the tires. If they're almost 10 or more years old, maybe you can get the price down a little to cover replacements.

I'd take more then a 10 minute ride. Just be careful ,they have a lot more power then you might think.

It has a very nice Jardine exhaust. Airbox is not tough to procure if you want one. The missing seat grab rail might offer a bigger challenge.

Have there been issues with not having airbox?

I definitely want to clean up the look ofvthe rear fender and seat. want it to be a solo ride.

If it runs good with no dead spots, you can leave it as is. It's easier to tune with the box. CV carbs like the box.

                          Grab rail

Andreas has an alloy grab rail in his parts list in the for sale section, I no it should be a tube but I prefer the look and the bike is far from stock imho. Good luck hope goes well!

Do you plan-on using the existing seat and fender for your mod? If not, please sell them on the forum.
