  • Lost a so called friends

Led a small group of four bikes with our SWMBO's on 4 day 900 mile trip. second day into the trip I learn that one bikes has a bald rear tire not worn but center of the tire is bald

So I don't say anything during the trip but warn the other riders to line up in front of him and if you couldn't; to keep extra space. After the trip I politely confronted him explaining we didn't appreciate the extra risk to us or to him.

You believe they both got pissed at me bringing up all kinds of irrelevant issues that had nothing to do with the tire.

Consideration for others(specially friends), and taking responsibility for own actions(or lack of in this case), IS the norn for todays society........sorry ain't how I was brought up, and commend you for the VERBAL concern to the friend. Outspoken as I am, would of done exactly the same.

Rick, why did you not say anything when you noticed? Could have been he had not noticed or it looked OK when he started but a day heavily loaded wore the last grooves off.

I went to XSSE a few years back with a tire I was sure would last 2500 mile round trip. Found out I was a terrible judge and had to buy a tire before returning home.

A friend on his Gold Wing once started a long ride with me and at first gas stop I noticed a slice in his front tire. I told him about it because I knew if it went out he could go down.

I'm not judging you, just wondering why not mention it right away.

Even with grooves they are not always good. This past trip I replaced a front that was cupping though it only had 6k miles on it because it was affecting handling.

Two days later in Durango I replaced rear that had plenty of grooves but the squaring shoulder that was developing also was affecting handling.

My point is it only cost me 90 minutes each time to correct the issue. Maybe your friend could have had a new tire on quickly too.

His tire was worn well before we started the trip. We spoke about it and he told me he had plans to replace it before the trip. I sort of anticipated their reaction. We had a 275 mile ride home and thought they would start drama It was a judgment call that proved to be the right thing in not confronting them on the trip.

IMO, cost over safety was the obvious choice, or Rickrod3 woulda' never got 'flamed' in the first place......and you can bet your sweet you-know-what he knew about it......the response says it all.

                Yes it sounds like it.

I probably would not ride with him again until he comes to terms with it.
