I recently cracked mine also. It was a factory job but of course the dealer threw his hands up when I asked him for a replacement. This is what I did.
I took my old one to a place in Beaumont Texas that deals with plexiglass and such. They are glueing it together and will heat another up and set it on the original to get the bends. Then drill the holes and I also wanted them to add 4 inches to top of it. It will cost me about $100.
Right after I took it to them I found the same shield in JC Whitney for about the same money. So they might be your answer. If not let me know and I will give you the address to the place here if they do a good job.

Please be gentle with me: this is my first posting. I am a newbe!
I have a Plexstar 2 on my '79 XS11 special. I really can't say enough good about it. It adds tremendous stability to a rather quick-steering, and responsive bike. It is easy to mount, looks like it was designed for the bike, is very reasonably priced, and is designed to pop loose if struck from your side of the windshield by something like, say, your head.
I have had my XS up to 100 mph with this shield, with plenty of throttle left. The bike was remarkably stable, and I was remarkably comfortable. I only backed off because it was, after all, a California freeway and under the watchful eye of the CHP. I'd sure like to take it out on some dry lake bed and open it up!
But I digress...
I've had 3 Plexstars in as many years. A knock-down from a rolling cage ate one, my stupidity cost another, and I've had the current one for almost 2 years now. But at the price (+ - $175) one could just regard yearly replacement as part of annual maintainance cost.

My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"
I've been riding since 1959.

I've often wondered about putting a windshield on my 80 SG. The guys I ride with seem to enjoy theirs. It would beat having to pick the bugs from my teeth. Those big juicy bugs sure do hurt when they make impact on my face. On the other hand, I just think the windshield takes away from the appearence of the bike(kinda gives the old man look) no disrespect to anyone with the windshields. Just my opinion!

Jerry,
Good point. If I can convince the wife to let me buy another bike for touring, then I'd have the best of both worlds. Guess I better start savin/collecting those aluminimum cans. I'd like to make it to a XSive rally in the future

windshields
Hey Kevin-
O.K., you got me... I'm an old man. A geezer. An old fart. My first bike was a Harley "Super 10" way back in ninteen ought and fifty-nine! Had many a bike since then, but so far my favorite ride is my '79 XS Special. When that mofo hits 4500 RPM... well its the most fun a guy can have outside o' bed.
But yea, if ya gotta put a windshield on an XS I still highly recomend the Plexstar 2. I wanna do the Ironbutt. As far as I'm concerned anyone who wants to ride that far sans windshield is a masochist... which is O.K., mind you, but it ain't my bag... know whut I mean, Vern?
