  • New intake manifolds = whole new world

    Dear Sirs,
After picking up my XS11 last week and nearly freezing my fingers off doing so, I deemed the intake manifolds miraculous for getting me home. I put in the order for a new set which came in today. After taking the fragrant old dogs off I could see just how amazing it was that I made it home. They were all cracked all the way through and two of them were severed more than half of the circumfrance. There is no airbox on this bike. I got it, but it has the previous owner's indy cone filters on it, which we all know means added stress to the intakes.
So, I put the new ones on and replaced all the multicolored fuel lines (all various shades of blue from age and sun). After putting everything back together it was time to see how much of a difference the new intakes made.
When I got out to the street, I started the bike and put it in gear. Nothing special, got up to 2K RPMS and flipped it to second. Opened the throttle a bit and sped up a little more. Much smoother, but still nothing impressive. Then I say, **** I'll just open it up and see what happens. Good acceleration until I hit just under 4K RPMS. Then the damned thing nearly bucked me right off. I was absolutely shocked by how much power it had in that range.
Im not sure what I can do to get the low end up a little more. Tomorrow is spark plugs and the replacement of one of the plug boots. The rythm of the engine idling still seems a little off. Maybe that'll help it. but in the meantime, I'm not complaining. This bike is the BAOWMB!

One thing that will help bikes with custom airfilters is to use nylon wire tires from the frame to the carbs to help support the weight of the carbs. It's a cheap fix and well worth the effort.

        Hey there Ian,

I saw where you stated that you shifted up to 2nd at 2Krpm, geez, you're barely above idle at that point, it's no wonder you weren't aware of the power band at 4k!! Have you looked at the tach closely, it redlines at 8.5!! The XS isn't a Harley, it likes to run at the higher rpms, ie. 5-6+.

I couldn't remember all the details about your bike, aside from the Indy filters, whether you were running 4-1 pipes or stock 4-2? If 4-1's, then there is report of loss of lowend "grunt". You might need to rejet a few sizes bigger as well!? I rarely run mine below 4K in any gear! I have much better throttle response, and also better engine braking effect! So...open it up a little and enjoy the wider power band!!!

              low to mid range

I'm not real sure on your bike, but on mine i rasied the needle with a very small lock washer(flattened out with pliers). Helped my mid range considerably.Reason for washer is Xj's needle is non adjustable.I think xs's needles are adjustable? Some one with noledge can elaberate.

I just put new ones on mine for purely cosmetic reasons. The old ones don't leak & the cracks aren't very deep. Perhaps someone could use them that doesn't want to spend the money for new? I'd take 20 bucks plus S/H for the set. Send me a PM if interested.

The only XS carbs that have adjustable needles are the 78-79's. 80-81's are non adjustable, like the XJ's. Good idea on the washers though.
