It sounds like the universal joint. Pull back the boot just behind the engine and look it over. It should be obvious if it's bad.

By the way, these u-joints can be serviced if you get to them early. They come apart just like automotive ones and can be cleaned an re-lubed. Unfortunatley, we don't have a zerk fitting for greasing, so the only way to do it is to take it apart. Of course, all references to it say that it is not serviceable. Don't buy it. I did mine in about an hour, although it was already off. Add an hour to remove it and replace it.

Do it as part of your seasonal service routine. Something to think about because these U-Joints are NLA. Once you hear it clicking, it's too late for service, must be replaced.

        thanks

I would like to thank folk on here for the feedback , I got to the bottom of the problem . If you have a serious knocking from rear end but only wen in gear , take out the sump plug in rear bevel drive unit , if swarf is on magnet you probably have a knackered rear gear like me , luckily I chated to some good folk off this site who helped me solve the problem , hopefully not fitted parts yet .
Thanks to Robbie & Mark , I owe ya one , Balders .
