One correction...My Honda has the EX package, not the ES package I mentioned. The EX is the higher trim level and comes with more goodies.

For all those interested, I grabbed an '05 Mercury Sable LS Platinum Edition for $2500. 88k on the motor, clean carfax, single owner. Seems to run okay, rantransmissions are a known issue on the Taurus/Sable. Hopefully that does not show itself. These cars are a little too heavy for me to flip on their back to work on

The transmissions on these are fine if you have them serviced about every 80K (new fluid/filter). Basically just an upscale Taurus, these can deliver pretty decent mileage if you have the 3.0 V6 (I saw 27 mpg on the freeway with one I had with 6 people in it at 75 mph), the larger 6 not quite so much. Just a nice, comfortable family car.... which is why Ford sold a ton of 'em...

Heat is a transmissions bane. I installed a trans cooler on the Taurus I used to own. Plumb it so the oil flows from the trans, through cooler, and then through radiator cooler. This will keep the oil temp up in the winter, and low in the summer. I was able to get over 100K on my transaxle.
