Latest Eleven Project Bike

After owning a near new '79 full dresser back in 1980, I have owned and rode a ,dozen different bikes over the years. My last was an 1988 GL1500 Wing that I fixed up and sold for a tidy little profit. Afterwards, I bought my second 1979 full dress Yamaha XSEleven. So far, I have replaced the brakes, tires, pluggs, all fluids, & the original electric oil pressure gauge with a new mechanical VDO system (nice to see 70lbs staring at you). I still plan to adjust the valves and sync the carbs. She's a real one-owner gal with only 38,600 miles on her.

That Lockhart Oil Cooler came standard with the dealer installed factory Touring Package. If I remember corectly, my first Touring Eleven came with one as well. Only it didn't come with any of the optional VDO instraments like this one did.

The Oil temperture gauge is the only gauge not working presently. It used a sending unit that took the place of the factory drain plug in the engine pan. This proved to be a poor design, as the original owner told me that after 10 oil changes these cource threads became stripped, so he had to drill it out larger and installed a larger drain plug & O-ring.

That remedy worked fine, however I still need to find another place to mount the sending unit. I think that I will add another T-fitting in the oposite cooler oil line (output side) and mounting the temp sensor inside of this so that the temperture gauge would show what the cooled down oil tempereture is before going back into the engine.

I started to list a few of the gasket sets on ebay for old 60 and 70 bikes, a Yamaha CT1 175 and a Honda CB/CL 350 set so far. I didn't feel like taking them out to the garage again. I got 4 or 5 more I may list today if I get time. Yamaha DT100 A, B, C and DT360A and YDS-7 complete gasket sets. I am only about 25-30% done cataloging stuff. So you were the one that got the Topeka XS11 on eBay?? Looks like mine once was, well before I got a hold of it...

I've been lurking around on the KSMR & KCMR forums for a while, and it's been a nice source for info here in this neck of the woods. Wife & I are planning on the Harley demo here in town on the 22nd (!!!), and we never would have known if it weren't for that forum.

Maybe we'll cross paths in Cassoday sometime...look for the rattier H with the leaky head gasket.

Yea, That's the bike all right. I wound up paying a little more then I should have considering what I have put into it so far.

I see you have one of the last model Elevens and a 750 Special. Before I bought my first Eleven, I had a new 750 Special. Nice bike, just lacked the power I wanted at the time. The sound of the triple's reminds me of a 6-cylinder Porche.

I plan on ridding to the biker breakfast at Cottonwood Falls this Sunday morning, lord willing and the weather cooperates.

You live in one of the most beutiful cities in Kansas. Nice rolling hills there. I made it up there several times to help my son's girlfriend move in and out of KU year after year. My son went to WSU and his girlfriend went to KU. Needless to say he spent many of his weekends on the KS Turnpike a lot.

Take care. I will look for either of your classics at Cassoday each month. It's hard to believe how big Cassoday has grown in recent years. Such a small crossroads of 200 people that host several thousand bikers for a few hours every first Sunday morning.

The 750 Special was my first bike, nearly 10 years ago now. It was a complete basket case that took me 17 months to get running. But it and a parts bike only cost $250, I learned a helluva lot working on it, and I've put 15K miles on it since then. At one time, it had all the full-dress gear on it, but since the 11 has come around, I've stripped it back down (for now--I kinda miss the Windjammer).

Cottonwood Falls is out for me this month, and it's been a bit chilly for SWMBO & me to hit Cassoday the last 2 months (I went alone in March when it was even colder--what a blast!), but we have June on the calendar. Last month, we instead did an overnight in the Truman Lake, MO, area, thinking we were avoiding the cold...and got 52 degrees and rain most of the trip.

sounds like memory lane to me. My first bike was also a 750 special, back in late '78, got it from a guy who decided that it was too cold to ride when it was 50 degrees, only had 1500 miles on it! Since then...a xs650 two lunger (unknown year) in Italy, a 1979 xs1100 standard in Germany, and a xs1100 standard in Cali/Nevada...and (finally!!!) got my hands on my third xs1100 this morning ('80 Special this time). Really missed the engine on the xs!! The Suzuki I have just doesn't pull like that.
