  • Mercury substitute?

Has anyone found a source for replacement mercury in Carb Sticks?
Maybe a substitute like gear oil?

Motion pro and others make the sync with blue fluid and to overcome the weight difference in the mercury there are tiny restrictive jets in the synchronizer lines near the carbs. I built a set last summer from scratch and used blue 2 stroke oil, just incase one carb was way off and pulled the oil in. There are countless sites that offer free ideas for building them for less than $5. I personally like the "all tubes connected" versions because very small variations in vacuum show a fair amount of movement in the tubes.

        this is the one

I have and love it. A little pricey but in my mind a lifelong investment.

Set my carbs with one of those once, I had to straighten them out with my cheap analog gauges when I got home.

Try something once with those. Hook them all together to a SINGLE vacuum source and see if they all read the same. If you have had that tool for very long at all I bet they don't.

I can adjust my cheap gauges to be synchronized and reading the same from a single vacuum source. Mercury evaporates........

The one you used must not have been well cared for before your use. I would imagine that if any type of dust or grit gets in the tubes it could effect the tubes and stainless rods in them by allowing air to escape around them. Sort of like sanding the tubes. Mine has always been stored properly inside so I still have great success with it. Do you have an example of what you are using or a link to it?

The one I used and got poor results was exactly like what you have, THIS is what I use.

                That

Is exactly what I just bought.

I could have made up one of those liquid in tube gauges. I even have enough mercury switches that I could have scavenged the mercury from to use instead of colored water but having accurate analog gauges was more important.

To me its just easier to read and faster.

The medium used instead of mercury will not react the same as mercury, so the answer is no there is no replacement for mercury. Others can be used with restrictions in the lines or slow moving fluids like trans fluid using 2 to 4 like baby bottles cemented to a board and linked to atmospheric pressure by hoses connecting them. I made a set of ultra sensitive gauges using fuel mixed with blue 2 stroke oil. The thing is you must get the mercury styx (my last bit of mercury is in my carb styx I bought in 79 for doing my SF) a close to perfect as you can or the more open carb will suck all the fluid right in. This has been suggested to me by JETMECH as the fine tune for the mixture screws, have not tried it yet. Maybe if we had the collective wisdom of channel 11 something could be developed, marketed and we could all join in on the profits ? ? ? Prolly make 1-20 bucks a year ea. ?
