I just formed the forum after lurking as a visitor for the summer. I just needed to join to thank the membership for the excellent repair info. I bought a 1981 Midnight Special last May. It was not running, a dead battery, and the owner broke off the mirror just before he showed it to me. All that dropped the price from $600 to $400!! He said it needed new carb boots as it ran rough the last time it was running. I changed the boots, new gas lines and diaphragms and it still ran bad. Tore apart the carbs and overhauled them...still ran rough. Lots of other stories there... At a dead end and then I returned to the forums for one last shot. Read one about missing during acceleration that was blamed on a broken wire in the vacuum advance. I had seen that thread before and checked it out, but I looked closer a second time. Sure enough, there was a broken wire in the vacuum advance that I missed. Textbook break inside the insulation. Fixed it and the bike runs fine!!! There were lots of other things to be done as it was still a rough bike, but it cleaned up well. Amazing for $400. Thanks again to all you XSers!
