I just brought home a 1980 XS11 standard. I traded my old broken ATV for it. It's in pretty rough shape, but I'm glad to have a bike again, it's been 8 or 9 years.

I don't have a key for it, and the tank and ignition look like someone tried jamming a screwdriver in it. Should I replace these? Or would a locksmith be able to repair them and make a key? Luckily the tank is open, so I can start cleaning it and then the petcocks.

Then I plan on cleaning the carbs. The airbox was off, and it looks like there's some kind of sealant gooped on at least one boot, so this should be fun. Then a battery, and hopefully the engine isn't locked up.

Is there a preferred source for parts?

Welcome to XS11, you are at the right place for info and parts. For parts you can check in the Buy, Sale and Trade Form here or Ebay. There is a member here andreashweiss that has great deals on used parts.

Hi Oakback, I used a new ignition lock, and took out the tumblers from the tank cap and sidepanel lock so any key fits.

                    Nice project

                      For OEM parts, I use:

                      Yamaha Sports Center
                      Yamaha Parts House

I also use those places linked by BikerPhil. Make it stop. Make it go. The cosmetic stuff can wait. Welcome aboard!

I took apart my carbs to clean them. I had never done this before, but with plenty of reading and watching vids on youtube it went pretty well. A couple of the jets I couldn't remove, but was sure to ensure they were clear.

However, I broke 2 main jets, for carbs 2 and 3. It took nearly zero effort, I wonder if they were previously over tightened (I could tell by other marks and stripped screws that someone had taken these apart before).

What size should they be? I've searched a lot, and I've found both 115 and 120. One source would say 115 for carbs 2&3 and 120 for 1&2, but another would say 120 for 2&3 and 115 for 1&2.

                        Which is it?

edit: Also, what is the name of the parts that connects between carbs to allow the fuel to distribute to each one?

If the mains were corroded enough to break off you most certainly didn't get all the crud out of the others you didn't remove.

It most likely won't run right until you get them out and clean in there REAL WELL.

Tip; always replace any bad jets with genuine Mikuni jets or you will most likely have running issues.

                              115 on 1 & 4 and 120 on 2 & 3.

Most just run 120's all across though.
