  • The 'resurection' of Scarlet

Not really a techincal thread, so I thought I'd put it in the member's lounge.

So, a WHILE back, my SG (Scarlet) had a head gasket problem and I ended up burning/holed 2 pistons.
TC was kind enough to give me an 81 donor motor so I could get her back up and running. That was last year sometime. I did swap that engine in and she ran fine for a while.
First gear started skipping like a machine gun and the #3 spark plug hole had a helicoil in it.
So, over the winter and early spring I have been trying to get the original engine back up to snuff. (used pistons, new rings, etc)
Last week I had it all buttoned up ready for transplant back in, just to find out that the #4 intake valve was bent.
I had already pulled all the stuff off Scarlet to get ready, so I just pulled the head off the 81 motor and pulled a valve out and swapped it into the SG motor sitting on the ground.
This Sunday, with the help of my Brother in law, I swapped the engine back in. I used a tow strap over a beam in the carport and some ratchet straps.

We used a jack underneath and a crowbar to finesse the engine to line up with the mounting holes.
I got all the rest of the stuff on and she fired right up after about 2 cranks.
The #2 pipe had come out of the collector so it was a bit noisy, but other than that it went fairly smooth.
That afternoon, I went to the gas station and filled her up and gave her a quick bath to get some of the dust and bird poo off and adjusted the clutch and throttle cable play and today (Monday) rode her to work.
    YIPPEE!

Okay, so next is an oil change, (after the rings get seated some), a sync after the engine gets worn in a little more and rechecking the torque on the head bolts and such.

That's all for now. Just thought I'd share my fun with my 'project'.

    EDIT:

Oh yeah, she's ready for XSEast NOW!

      Thanks Mark.
What started out as a hobby has turned into an obsession.
Just trying to keep one of these bikes running so I have something to ride to work. LOL

I guess I've got to fix my signature lines now.
