  • 2nd post and a thank you to the tech section.

    Hi all,
Well, my first post was a hello and my second is a thank you.

The thank you is for the fab souls that put together the tech section of the site.
I took the bike up for its Manx test the other day (we don't do an MOT each year like the UK, just a test on arriving in the Island)
The bike needed a front tyre as it had been sitting for a long time by the look of it. The tester was going to fail the bike on the uneven pad wear on the front (as he thought it must be a problem).
I explained that they are supposed to wear on a taper (I read it here) and he was cool. Test passed.

A quick blast out of town the other day and the clutch has started slipping. I thought 'oh no, whole new clutch' but according to the teech section again, it may be no more than a sticky cable or may need spacers on the springs. Two reads, two saves. Result.

Now, I also have a question: The seat lock. Is it supposed to open with the ign key? I have tried pushing the seat down, turning the key left/right etc and no joy. I only have one key for the ign so I am reluctant to force it in case it breaks.
    Am I missing something?

There is no seat lock, the seat is only held on by 2 14mm nuts on either side of the seat about in the middle.

There is a helmet lock on the left side of the bike by the shock mount, but all that does is flip open the little metal loop so you can hang your helmet.

There is also the lock for the left side cover down by the middle drive facing forward. That unlocks the left side cover for removal (that is if someone else hasn't broken the tab off the side cover already.

Oh, and yes, they are all supposed to be keyed to the same ignition key but locks get changed over the years so they may not be the same anymore. Then again they could be dirty and need a good disassembly and cleaning too.

First thing you need to do is go get three keys made. Hang one at home, give one to your mother, and hide the third someplace on the bike where you will know it's there, but will have forgotten where when you lose the one that got you to the pub.

Hahaha, well if I'm gonna ask questions, then some of them have to be daft ones.
No wonder I couldn't get the seat to lift up with the key.
I saw the little tab moving and still didnt twig it was a helmet lock.

Yer, good call on getting some more keys cut for her.

            Hi Zapper,
            six is better.
            1) on your bike key fob. 2) taped inside the right hand side cover. 3) in your billfold. 4) in your sock drawer. 5) at your mom's place. 6) in your bank safety deposit box.

              Another question,
I thought I'd just stick it on the end of here instead of starting a whole new thread.

              My serial num is 4h3001218
Which according to the list on here makes it an 80 lg.
Does anyone know what the sequence of numbers stands for?

                Hi, Baz ...

Well, the U.S. LG serial numbers started with 4H3-000101. The 4H3, as you said, makes it an '80 Midnight.

I believe the last 6 digits (someone CMIIW) indicate what number your bike was off the assembly line, so ...

if your last 6 digits are 001218, then your bike was the 1,118th Midnight to come off the assembly line that year.

Isn't nice when some fixes are simple, after you think you're into time and money to get it sorted.
The slipping clutch was the adjuster on the perch being so far out it was actually pulling the cable. Hahaha, strange.
Fixing it with one hand whilst holding a cuppa, was a bonus, and probably just showing off. :-)
