        I like my Wrap

My stock headers were rusting, pitting and blued, but still solid. I sanded the rust off and then "tried" to high temp paint them. They looked great for a few hundred miles, but then the paint started to chip and flake off, looked awful. Tried to paint them again, and the same thing happened. I got tired of it, but the headers were solid so didn't want to pay for new ones, so I wrapped them with black wrap, then put high temp silicone spray to protect and seal the wrap. Looks great to me, complements my silver frame and gloss engine.

Don't know if anyone mentioned it, but they can stink like a dog when they get wet, those wrapped headers.

            Hey Rettic,

That grey colored wrap looks much better than the natural/tan stuff IMHO!

However, I wonder how hard it would be to put something like this OVER the headers?? It comes in a variety of ID's, 1.5", 1.625" etc., and it's only $60 for 25 feet of it! Even though the aftermarket pipes are ~1.5" diameter, there is also the flange/clamp pieces! SO....I think one could get a metal cutting disc and split it right down the length of it, and then use some hose clamps to secure it at both ends like the wrap, and this way you could use a size that's very close to the OD of the pipes you want to cover. It's steel, galvanized! J.A.T. !?

However, it might not be Splittable because it's made from a long thinner section that's been wrapped/crimped to fit/engage the sides of the strip as it goes around and around to make the pipe, and cutting it may cause it to fall/slip apart at each ripple???

That would prove arduous to keep tidy and you would probably get tired of keeping it spiffed up, leading to covering with . . . HEADER WRAP

                Interesting thread.

i have a set of spaghetti pipes and turnout "mufflers" that I had on "Sparky," and are destined to be installed on "Phoenix" when DiverRay and I get "a round toit." The pipes are solid but dented and rusted. I have also tried paint, but even the most expensive ceramic "high temp" header paint doesn't last for more than a few hundred miles. If I were a rich man I would send them off to get ceramic coated, which I hear would be the ultimate solution. For a poor man, the idea of a wrap with silicon spray seems like a winner. Might look good with my intended "steam punk" treatment.

My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"

Actually, there was a Special in Michigan I considered buying with Jardine spaghettis and header wrap. Sharp bike.

                    Hi Special Ed,
Steam Punk would be a perfect match for Header Wrap.
CAUTION. the wrap traps moisture and therefore promotes Rust. A last resort solution in my opinion.

To go with the "steam punk" theme, tie the warp with copper wire.

Awesome, I love hearing from both sides of the spectrum. Love the bit about the fairings lol Thanks for the tip on the lava wrap, if I decide to go that route I will look into it! It seems with the pipes on these bikes being so exposed there's no coating that would withstand the abuse of rock chips and otherwise, I feel like if you want anything but chrome/polished headerwrap would be the best bet for a virtually maintenance free finish. I do like the look of the black wrap over the tan as well!

Hey maybe it can be used to hide a rusted out frame too, haha. I guess the frame would rust then.

Thanks! It doesn't need to be soaked before it is installed either. I have used the fiberglass wrap many times over the years, this was the first time I used the Lava wrap (also known as volcanic exhaust wrap). In my opinion It's the best. It also handles heat a lot better than the other stuff. You can get it in a slightly darker tone and I believe it is also now available in a black.
