    Random punkthoughts

    Hi Ed,
wooden gas tank? Find a totally FUBAR mandolin & cut the neck off?
Hiding a plastic dirt bike tank inside it would be the easiest way.
True steampunk doesn't admit to electricity and acetylene lights would look really cool.
Hi/Low beam by mechanically tilting the headlight.
Stops & signals would need to be lit all the time and have clockwork shutters to show or flash them at need.
Mind you, the flywheel starter & diesel thing demanded by the hardline purists would be real hard to do.

        Hi Ed,
I wonder if the West System might be a solution with cedar strips like a canoe? http://www.westsystem.com/ss/

Well I guess I'll have to refer to it as "Steam Punk style." for one thing I'm not sure those mods would pass muster here in "Can'taffordya;" sounds like a hassle to operate; and I'm not a purist about anything. Except I don't wear anything under my Kilt. I'm just sayin'...

I appreciate your post to this thread, Fred

My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"

It came to me the other day that could could also try gluing some wood strips into the hollow part of the spokes for a wagon wheel effect.

Vinyl sheets could be used to stretch over the tank, wood grain or copper looking...I've seen some videos on Youtube of kids dressing their wheels...JAT

I vote Hydrographics. Many different patterns to chose from and looks great when done.

I haven't posted a photo from Photo Bucket in a while, so I hope this works. I took this shot at the Dream Machines event in Half Moon Bay. The origional Buffalo Springfield.
I checked into Hydro grafting:$400 to do a tank, which is over my budget, but maybe a dark green tank with wooden side panels with brass yellow pin striping? I think I may be able to coach a few strips of veneer to conform to the mild curve of the side of an XS11 tank. Hydro grafting is a really cool technology for those that can afford it Here my brothers, is the original steam to which all you punks aspire!!

You could cover the tank like this, just give it a heavy clear coat. Click on the first photo for some close-up detail.

                      Oops, my bad...

Great ideas guys; keep them coming. I think I have this figured out now. Here is the pic of the Buffalo Springfied steam roller. Dark green with "gold" lettering was fairly common on old steam tractors, etc. I might try it on Phoenix.
