  • Was There Ever an OEM Brown Color?

So, I'm familiar with the OEM colors per model/year, etc. But, from my understanding, my bike was brown prior to re-paint. I think I recall Gabe (Down$hift) telling me that one of his bikes was the same color. So, with two bikes being brown, was there colors produced other than what's stated in the guide?

No brown, but an oxidized Macho Maroon could be mistaken for a ruddy brown.
1980 XS1100G "Dolly G" Full Dresser (with a coat of many colors )
    1979 XS1100SF (stock-euro mods planned)
    1984 XV700L Virago (to be hot-modded)
    1983 XJ750MK Midnight Maxim (semi-restored DD)
    1977 XS650D ( patiently awaiting resto)

Sometimes it takes a whole tank of gas before you can think straight.

I have seen a couple 80 model years bikes with that Deep Dark Red that looks very brown or DEEP maroon.

Depending where you look, that is Brown, Red Maroon, or even almost black.

Nah, not brown, its a Euro Standard with BIG tank, black engine, further back footrests and rear indicators, certainly it looks brown in the pic but its a Black Gold paint, the sun picks out the gold giving the impression of being brown but in normal light they look black.

Yeah, it was funny how the OEM paint on some of these could look just lifeless in some light and positively glow in direct sunlight. The colors used on the standards in particular were this way...

Hmm. That certainly looks like the paint color Scott had on his prior to re-paint. I guess I'll concede it's not brown, but it sure looks like it.

Ian, we had this discussion a while back on the UK XS forum, our Yamaha experts (not me ) Lamric and Miti went through the European Yamaha catalogues and found no mention of there ever being a brown XS1100 produced.

Thanks Marty, I've owned this bike for 30 years, this was taken in 2008 when my son could just reach the rear footrests, last summer he came with me to Portugal for a 3 and 1/2 week tour on my 5K7, he loved it.

                            Brown

My 78E has the macho maroon. 79F’s were offered in brown. I remember back at the first XSEast back in 1998, that one rider, I can’t recall his name, had a brown 79F. The two colors are definitely different.

U.S. '79F models were offered in either Magenta Red or Indigo Blue. Even non-U.S. '79F models were not offered in brown.

Maybe re-painted or possibly, as Steve said, an oxidized Magenta Red?
