  • Standard Fork Question

I have noticed something interesting in the Yamaha factory service manuals. It concerns the amount of fork oil to be used when replacing the oil. They recommend a lesser amount for the E than the newer models. Newer models seem to require about an ounce more.

Does anyone know the answer to this riddle?

    The Specials have longer forks.

The air space on top of the oil is a tuning point for the front suspension. Air will compress; the oil will not.

I've noticed that too Mike. The oil capacity is different from a SG to an SH but I can see no difference in the internals.

My thinking is along the lines of what Marty said. More oil = stiffer ride.

not sure about the others, but my '79F calls for 7.12 oz. of fork oil, I just did the old fork seal job.
