  • Been looking at project Goldwings in my area..

I've been debating turning my XS into a street bike ( still keeping it OE )

And getting a project goldwing for touring duty.

I've been seeing lots of em around here that " need carb cleaning " or other "simple" things they want under a grand for em usually.

I like the look of the gigantic beasts.
But are they really worth the trouble?

My ex-coworker's father has an older one, and his was pretty maintenance-free. From the research I did for him on his, try to stay away from anything prior to '86. A bunch of problems back then.

As far as my preference for them, I'd love to get away with riding one. It's a LAY-Z-BOY on wheels. But, I'll pass. I'd rather stay youthful and get an ST.

Well worth it. And they are more nimble than they look, low center of gravity and mostly plastic above makes for a very stable ride. Lots of torque and luggage space too.

I researched the models and chose the 1500 late 90's based on what I read about the pricing, features and troubles through the years. Take note of the three major models of the 1500:

Interstate - low end, no intercom, no reverse, CB optional
Aspencade - mid grade, intercom, reverse, CB optional
SE Special Edition - All the bells n whistles intercom, CB, reverse, adjustable passenger footrests, vented windshield, cornering lights, air adjust suspension.

Only 2 carbs on the 1500, so cleaning is easy, but getting to them is a few-hour job removing / replacing Tupperware.

150,000 - 200,000 mi is not unheard-of on these. I can get near 40 mpg if I baby it. OK, mid to high 30's is normal.

Visit a dealer in mid-winter for a good deal, have them service it and pick it up in Spring.

        Damned sit timed me out.

Less than a grand is a REAL project. Prob an 1100 / 1200 (4 cyl).

I dropped $7200 on a creampuff '98 SE 11k miles and that was a steal. You always get what you pay for.

I would like one someday. Decided to cruise craigslist here and found a Wing with a Pacifico fairing and thought that was interesting!

Actually it probably does come with all the lights. If they didn't want to go through the trouble of taking the decals off, and just spray painted over them, they sure won't go through the hassle of taking the lights off.

My mistake. If you read all the way to the bottom of the listing's Q & A section it says the lights come with it..."everything as pictured..."

If I were closer I would take a look at it. Looks to be a higher-level model with intercom, radio, and adjustable suspension.

I would like this one myself.
I used to have a black 1978 and i would love to have another.
Bought mine brand new and I am pretty sure I had over 100,000 miles on it when my dad took it over and added more.
