As its been said, its mechanical...

Mine was a total mess when I got mine...but slowly and surely, after half a year of work on and off its made a trip to ohio and back to FL....

I was nervous about doing valve shims because it was new to me.
    It was no sweat.

I'm sure the same can be said about the transmission fix.
Ive seen a bunch of threads where its been done.

The rest sounds like little stuff.

      Punisher

My bike is named "Punisher" for a reason. Keeping these old bikes on the road is a real job. If you just want to ride you might want to consider another bike. Riding a bike that is not road worthy is not a good idea. The internet is a good place for parts, A bike that is in the condition you have described is going to need a lot of attention. Welcome to the site, you will find lots of good information here.

Oh man Oh man, I'm telling you what! So thank you for the link to the manual it was a trip to see all of that info. I just got done doing the cam chain tensioner and yes that is a lot more power. I have the tool ordered to do the valves and with the manual im pretty sure it will be simple. I was leaking a little oil so i got a new valve cover gasket. In the meantime I got that honda rebel finished and was rejetting the carbs which made me think...

Since i went to pod filters and straight exhaust on my XS, How many sizes do I go up to on my main jet and idle jet?
Am i losing power from not rejetting after I cut off the exhaust and went to pod filters?

What's next? Im looking for a speedo cable, Do's Dont's and advice on fork seals, oil I should or shouldnt use?

It's a matter of following the manual (I like the Yamaha Service Manual best, but any Clymers or Haynes is better than none), any questions, direct to the list, between them all, they know it all. Ask here 1st before doing anything you question.

And childish name calling definitely puts you running in that race as well, just nowhere near the finish line.

Glad to see you're finally putting some effort into maintenance.

Ha ha ha.......don't knock it. When I first put my bike together I wanted loud too. I built these out of some SS automotive exhaust tips.

They have perforated straight through baffles wrapped with about 1/2" of SS wool. They sound cool but all that noise got old fast. These were actually on Ol' Okie when I went to my first XS rally. It was the M.O.M. rally at Kat and Johns house in Ft. Worth. Everybody bitched about the noise.

I still have them. They slip right on a Mack 4 into 2.

                    Hi Freedo,
take care adjusting valve clearance, get out of step with yourself and you may get a bent valve.
There's jet numbers on this site for intake and exhaust mods. Sizes depend on what exactly you changed.
Was your exhaust in good shape before you cut the mufflers off?
Do you know how much a good complete XS11 exhaust system sells for these days?
And yes, you lost power. ANY street bike's cams NEED back-pressure to work right.
And shame on you, slagging the special olympians. What have YOU done recently to drive yourself beyond your natural limits?

C'mon now, Fred. The worst he did was compare me to retarded kids. (Yeah, politically not the correct term. I'm not the least politically correct, so sue me, but I do resemble the retarded at times!)

I did have an EXTRA Crown and Coke last night? Does that count?

                          Mechanic's

Freedo, there is nothing mechanical you will ever need to do to your bike where the how/why and when can't be found on this forum. Spend some time looking through the manual, then spend much more time researching the resources available here before you start work.
If in doubt, just ask. As you have already found out, everyone is willing to help, you may also receive some occasional good natured ribbing. As your confidence grows you to will dish some out.
                          Good luck and welcome.

Hi Freedo, Welcome to the madness of XS11.
I'll answer the speedo cable question. Easy enough to find at any motorcycle shop or online. IF the outer case is in good shape you can get the universal cable at Napa or similar store. comes with one end already square and the tool to square up the other with a hammer. Mine was $4 a few years ago and lasted about 25000 miles

                              Hey Freedo,

Take a look at this thread in the Tech tips, Mods, Fuel/carbs section:
                              http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=382

Also take a look at the other threads there, regarding the pod filter mounting mods. There's lots of info in the tech tips just for the looking!

Do a search in the forum for fork seals, and techniques and recommendations on them....we really do need to make a tech tip for that!

Several sources for the speedo cable, ebay, etc.!
We don't recommend any oil that has anything printed in the lower half of the API Seal on the back of the bottle, our wet clutches don't play well with friction modifiers, see the manual for the recommended weight range for your location and season...usually 20-50...brands are up to you. We also don't recommend FULL SYNTH again for contributing to clutch slip.

                              History shows again and again,
How nature points out the folly of men!

And while thinking about it, many new folks don't realize the middle drive isn't lubed by the engine oil... until it locks up on them. Check it, and fill it and the final drive with full synthetic to their proper levels.
