  • It's official - I'm moving

SWMBO and I have been contemplating moving back to her hometown for several years, but my job and my house have been keeping us rather secure in Missouri. As of 10/4, after almost 10 years with the company, I am no longer employed. So, we are pulling up stakes and we will be moving to the Salt Lake valley in less than 2 weeks.

I'll be strapping my bike inside the U-haul with all the furniture and boxes, and towing my cage. SWMBO will be flying out, so she doesn't have to deal with the dog sharing the front seat with her. We'll be staying with the in-laws for a few months, and it may take a few days to a week before I can get my server running in their basement, so my website will be down for a bit.

Looks like I'll be trying to connect with more of the Western XSives now! You guys have rallies on that side of the country too, right? Unfortunately, I will be forced to winterized the bike now, with the abundance of snow there. Gone are the days of riding through the whole winter...

Anybody know of a good cover that will work over a Windjammer, bags and a trunk?

Aside from the unemployed part, I hope you are excited. I used to travel that area a lot on business and there are a lot of great roads to ride.

Time for a new adventure, right?

      Hi 'Bug,
back in the UK I could ride year-round and it must be selective memory that says it rained on me every single time I did so.
A whole other experience moving to the Canadian prairies with 6 months riding and 6 months shoveling snow.
Every tarp and cover I tried to keep the bike free from the elements either leaked or blew away or both.
What finally worked for me was a small shed. Sheetmetal thing from Sears that came in a packet. One person can assemble it in an afternoon but it has to be a calm afternoon.
Build it on a wooden base so it can be moved to your own place.

Fred, you are slacking! You didn't tell him to get a sidecar!
I grew up in North Dakota and there were a handful of guys that rode all year long, snow...ice....sub zero temps...anything. they all did have sidecars though.

            Snow?? What snow?

If you can handle the cold riding season does not get over with until mid December to January (at least for me ). Once the state workers clear the roads of the dreaded white stuff I get back on the bike (just have to clean the salt off more often) and no sidecar for me...at least not yet

Have Tcoop show you some good roads to ride there. I-80, I-84 on the back side of the Wasatch is a good ride. Trappers Loop from 84 to Huntsville is a short but scenic route to add to that. I'm an ex pat from Ogden and have family in the area too.

Go buy a Goldwing cover. It covers my bagger with ease.

I live in the mouth of Weber Canyon and when ever I need to test a bike (like all the time ) I hit trappers loop. 9 miles of sweeping turns and up hill both ways (it goes over a foot hill and peeks in the middle). Yep lots of grate roads in the mountains.

As a backup, the latest crawl from 2012 on archive.org looks like it has copies of the manuals, etc, just in case it takes a while to get the site back up.

                              Bugs

Have you been out west before ? I've visited on vacations and hunting. I've learned do not wear bright colors, try to blend in with the color of the surroundings. I wore a bright blue T shirt and got stung five times by the biggest bumble bees I ever saw. The next day I wore a white T and had no seeums all over me. Brown and sage green seemed to not attract them.
