How much protective clothing do you wear?

Thats' some interesting (and I'm sorry but - funny) wasp stories. The only similar thing I had was when I was messing about with a mate of mine - him in his car, me on my crotch rocket (126HP Race tuned GSXR1100); I'd just decided to give him the view of my rear tire and was accelerating and got hit by a couple of probably mosquitos, so I decided to flip my face down - I had just taken my hand off the visor and something?? just splashed the right side of it. If I'd waited a couple of seconds I would have taken that right in the face possibly the eye.

I feel bad for those kids, but if you ride dressed like that then there's one name for you - organ donor. Good work though Paintman, I've been first on the scene to 6 serious accidents and I'm on about a 50/50 for survivors, it's a tough thing.

Bad enough to hurt yourself...but completely irresponsible to have a passenger with no protection, and then ride like an idiot.

There are kids at work that ride the same way, and dress the same way.

Nothing you can tell them. Nothing you can do to convince them that they are just rolling the dice. Too bad the accident that changes their way of doing business will probably be their own.

It's that way with every generation, always will be.

Hey Axel i was a Flight Paramedic and ER Trauma Nurse for 22 yrs. i always have a kit with me and have seen way to many of these types of accidents esp during teh Sturgis Rally here people will ride 85 down a Hiway with shorts and a bandana On. add that and a few beers and you can guess the end result. like i use to tell people if you have a 10$ head get a 10$ helmet but most kids and alot of adults think it will never happen to them> so il continue to try and keep em alive.

What an excellent idea. What does your kit consist of? I have a pretty good idea, but I don't need a medicine chest.
I used to go to Sturgis,, It's totally insane nowdays. Heck I remember when you could pitch a tent inside the town at that little city park. Im talking early 80's. lol, them days are long gone.

Nice work though, Paintman, if one or both do make it you'll have played a big part in it. Even so, they're probably facing months, if not years, of PT.

Since our weather out here is so nice, there are LOTS of sportbike riders and their passengers who dress that way as well. In fact, a few days back, as I was riding out of Valley Center down a steep, twisty incline in tight traffic, a crotch rocket rider and passenger dressed exactly like that, came blasting by me and the rest of the traffic on the other side of the double yellow line ... maybe 30 mph faster. Made me shudder and I thought " this guy couldn't know this road or he wouldn't ride like that !!". I fully expected to see them in a heap somewhere further down the road ... but I didn't, thankfully.

I know, as motorcyclists, we assume a certain amount of extra risk ... comes with the territory .... each of us, as shown in this thread, are comfortable with a somewhat different level of it .... but the passenger is rarely informed or experienced with motocycling and most likely at a disadvantage to judge the amount of risk they're assuming at that moment. Passengers tend to just 'go along'. I feel that being 'responsible' suggests that we get them dressed as safely as possible regardless of what we wear ourselves.

I'm puttin a first aid kit on my bikes today ... thx for that thought, Guy.

Weather Appropriate

In winter fullface and insulateed pants with tech jacket with liner and vest underneath in summer short helmet or none and shorts under mesh pants with armor and either mesh jacket or duckcloth vest. Always hiking boots and gloves. Can't understand leather Jacket in summer tech is cheaper more comfortable and more practical but then never undestood fashion statement wold wear almost anything even polka dots if did the job was comfortable and can afford it. Even got lucky and found Tech clothing dealer on web who turned out to be local and as nice as could be. And while haven't gone down yet never know when sudden gust of gravity will happen has plenty of time on mountain bike.

I wear some stuff, I always do the full face lid thing, I 90% of the time have a jacket of some sort on (Leather or canvass), I 80% of the time wear gloves, I seldome wear proper riding pants as I'm usually riding to work and have those polyester gas station uniform type pants (may as well be riding without pants as far as wind and protection go) under 40 degrees F, I have a set of coveralls I wear (probably not the best protection available but they keep me warm) and I seldom wear boot, 35% of the time. I know there is a lot more stuff I should be wearing, and as I get it, I will wear it, until then, not. have a nice day and ride safe

First Aid kit

On the bike i have a kit i carry
1. latex gloves
2.4x4 gauze pads
3.ace bandage
4. Bandaids various sizes
5. Bascitracin( Neosprorin) helps with road rash
6.Medical tape . 1 inch and 3 inch wide
7.Butterfly strips IE instant stitches
8. 1 bottle of sterile water for washing dirt and rocks out of your owie when you go down.
9.and finnaly vet wrap comes in all diff sizes and basicly will hold any bandage in place.

Hope this helps in my vehicle i carry a full trauma kit including IV fluids LOL io can put you back together just liek one of these old bikes just need some bailing wire.

Hey on second thought, that sound like the old med-kit on a cartridge belt. Just couldn't remember(everything except the rubber gloves). Sometimes I have senior moments and suffer fron CRS LOL

I have a pocket kit which fits in a bigger belt mount kit . I also have a full backpack trauma kit in a authentic US pack and I have the FLC vest to go with it . I try to take one of these everywhere I go. Izzy'z ,Kerlix , Samsplint ,Asherman ,GSW comp ,epi-pen ,airways ,scrub kits,finger splints etc on and on

That pretty much sums up my philosophy and outlook when I am riding my bike(s).As other have also stated...its a war out there and m/c riders are invisible and should ride like that, is true.So while I've been lucky and never been down...I have had too many close calls that have awakened me to the realization that its only a matter of time before it does happen.I have read too many first hand accounts of how ATGATT has saved their life and prevented serious injuries to ignore the lessons being imparted to us.

I generally wear ear protection on long rides (50 miles or over). I find it cuts the fatigue factor a lot.

I've abused my ears over the years (working around aircraft in the Navy, shooting guns a lot in my youth without ear protection, riding bikes with loud pipes as well as playing guitar in loud bands).

I don't want to lose any more hearing than I've already lost. I'm pretty deaf in my left ear from standing on stages next to the drummer's ride cymbal in a million crummy bars.
