  • Bizzare accident

A motorcycleist was seriously injured on Interstate 70 in western Colorado. I ride / drive this route every day as it is on my round trip to and from work.

Basically, it was raining. The westbound rider (on a BMW) was hit by a trailer that came loose from an eastbound truck that was running to fast for conditions. Truck / trailer started to fishtail due to hydroplaning and the trailer came off, flew across the median, and landed on the biker. He is in serious condition in a Denver hospital.

My Patrol Commander says there were 2 other riders along with the guy who got hit but they were not involved in the accident. We (SWMBO) passed the accident on our way home and it looked ugly. What are the odds you would get hit by a flying trailer?

Have no other details...accident was handled by State Patrol and not my guys.

Really makes you wince when you see the aftermath. Guy was just in the wrong place at the srong time, not doing anything wrong, not speeding, no alcohol or drugs, wearing protective gear and - Wham- gets hit by a loose trailer.

    Be careful out there!

That happened here about 2 maybe 3 years ago. A trailer came off a truck, hit a guard rail, flipped over hit a bike going the other way and took one guys leg off. A couple more injuries but everyone lived. Happened to be a state cop right there and he applied a tourniquet and saved the guy from bleeding out.
Wrong size hitch ball for the trailer.

Sounds a lot like these guys that smack deer when they ride. Fluke. Wrong place at the wrong time... or maybe they just aren't living right?

I saw a trailer come unhooked from a truck and take out a few road signs a few years back. I envision that every time I'm in traffic with commercial vehicles.

Do you realize how really stupid some of those people who work landscaping or construction are?

At least at McDonalds all you have to worry about is your order being wrong.

Yup...unfortunately folks get these 3-400hp diesels pickup(I have one, but also 30+yrs experience with 18wheelers), that'll easily drag these 3axle loaded down 43ft. toy-haulers 80+ mph and nothin under 65mph pullin 7%grades, and trust me, they'll do it. Inexperience and conditions equals bad things for those near one. Just another aspect out there to be aware of, regardless of conditions. More and more of them on the slab, driving 80mph just cause the trucks will easily do it, no matter the load shoving them in the butt. Rear truck tire blow-out(non dually) or trailer tire blow out at those speeds would give you a handfull to CORRECTLY get slowed, if you even could without the unthinkable not happening. let alone if it happened on a two-lane or in a sweeper curve!

Maybe abstract for some people.. .Sorry. Ol' Potter smacked a deer a while back. Not sure who won, but he's still here walking around with us. Didn't seem to have changed his attitude any though...

On a similar vein, just north of Cincinnati is Dayton Ohio with a suburb called Xenia. Think about THIS happening to you.

You can see him cross center line a couple times, not paying attention to the road. I'd bet money that he never saw them because he was texting.

Boy, that's enough to give you Xenia phobia.

Something similar to that happened to Ivan a few years back. It wasn't a cop though.
