  • rant: Did my 2003 Tahoe intake gaskets.. ugh

My 03 Tahoe was showing signs of the dreaded intake-gasket leaking. Surging when cold and poor MPG. Picked up a set of new gaskets, knock sensors, fuel filter, and oil pressure sender. Figured that while I was in there....

Project went well in the 90+ degree heat yesterday. Got it all cleaned, buttoned up and now cylinder #8 isn't getting fuel. Spark is there, injector is getting pulses via a "noid light". Engine has a "miss" and when I pull #8 injector harness there is no drop in RPM. Getting p0200 code. I left the injectors and rails attached to the intake manifold when I did the gaskets. All I did was unhook the harnesses.

Thinking it's a clogged injector? It OHMs out to the same as the #1 injector. Are the 4.8/5.3 injectors known to fail suddenly??

Anyone mess with the Vortec 4.8/5.3? Google has lead me down many paths. I am picking up a spare injector rail after work with injectors for $85. Will try another injector and see what happens..

Check the pins in the injector where the plug goes. They have been to bend over inside there.

Thanks to your tip, I double checked the plug again. The pins on the injector were fine, but when I tried my noid-light it was intermittent. So, I cut the injector wires and tested the plug for wierdness at the workbench. As I was fiddling with the meter, the ground wire fell out of the plug. lol.

Soooo.. I simply pushed in the tiny little "tangs" on the connecter guts and pushed it out with a pin. Ended up soldering the wire to the insert and shoving it back into the socket. Used some crimps to re-install to the harness. Of course it's #8 and waaaaay in the back with no spare wire.

Cleared codes and it runs great again. I *almost* ended up buying a whole set of injectors and rails today. But, they called me back and said they didn't have them. $85 saved. Hell, $25 for 1 used injector or $100 for a new one at Advance Auto.

Thanks for the tip. I wouldn't have checked the plug again and would be elbow-deep in injectors and rails right about now.

I owe you a beer sometime!
