  • Should I make a mobile version of my site?

I've been playing with my website lately, and trying to learn new things while I do so. One thing I though of was the idea of building a mobile version of my site. It would be a slimmed-down version, and likely not include a lot of the long-winded "story" stuff I have in the main site, and focus on the links and resources.

I'm working on the idea of an automatic redirection for mobile devices (phones/tablets), to a page that would give an option to select the full version or the mobile one. Has anyone who has used/visited my site on a mobile device ever thought it would be beneficial to have a slimmed-down version for that purpose?

What would be the purpose of going to your site on a mobile device? I'm not being a wise guy, I just have no idea why I would need your site in my pocket.

As for accessing on a mobile device, it is probably more appropriate on a tablet than a phone, larger screen, more software. I can see using it to access the manuals when your in the garage or something like that not close to your PC to get info on the task at hand.

For me, any time I have accessed it on my smart phone, I have not had any issues with the size of the site.

I have whatever I need downloaded onto my laptop. That's what I often use in the garage.

I would like to know what you decide as I have been toying with the idea of "mobilizing" my web site as well. Not a lot of tech info but I do have rally and XS11 owner's galleries as well as blog posts. Main problem so far is that Apple devices don't render Flash-enabled applications well, and my photo galleries all use Flash.

As far as accessing web sites on my smartphone (iPhone 4) I don't unless as a last resort. I can do it, but prefer my iPad when I have it handy or go to the PC. Have never accessed your site on my smartphone.

Not sure myself, but I have heard several people mention that they view it on tablets or phones while working on a bike, or something like that. Personally, I think the format adjusts to my phone just fine, which is why I figured I'd ask you guys what you thought about the idea.

You might try something like Gallery to create non-flash photo galleries. I don't have any experience with it, but I do understand the need to make something like that i-compatible. In the sites that I frequent from my phone, the ones that I benefit most from their mobile versions are the blog sites. No zooming or adjusting the screen to see the text - its a clean, concise format, especially for long strings of text.
