  • Laptop Repair Help..I'm at my wits end!

Hey there folks and fellow geeks!

Okay, I've been working on a friends Acer Aspire 5532 laptop that died while she was using it. She did not have a cooling pad or flat surface/lap table, just on her lap so the cooling vents were blocked. She said that it came up with a "BLUE" screen and said some technobabble, and then the screen went black! The power led was still on.

SO....I checked the power supply, making 19 volts in spec. Pushing the power button, can see the screen flicker a little with back light, but that's it, no beeps, the front power on light is on, the hard drive spins, the power makes the DVD Drive click, but that's it. I figured she had fried the video chips or even the CPU.

I took it apart, found a ton of lint on the cooling grid/radiator. I tested the cooling fan, and it works. I ordered a replacement MOBO....first one did same thing, sent back as defective and got REFUND! Ordered and received second Mobo from different provider with Refurbished description, they had hundreds!. Installed and the exact same action.

SO...ordered a replacement CPU, installed, still same behavior! I have tried to connect to the VGA output with the first and now the second mobo, and can NOT get any display....tried the Fn and Video Output button...nothing!!!! Removed Ram and Hard Drive, tried boot, still nothing! I don't have a way to test the actual LCD video screen, but I don't think it went bad because it was being seen before the BSOD! But not getting any external VIDEO out put has me bothered/worried.

Can you think of any other things that would prevent it from working/booting like it should? I'll contact the Mobo provider and describe the results so as not to loose the DOA warranty!

I also just repaired an HP laptop that also had a bad mobo..swapped in the replacement Mobo and it fired right up first time, but this Acer is kicking my butt!

    TC,

I surmise that you are using Artic Silver Thermal Paste or a similar product when you swapped out the mobo's and the CPU.

Normally you should at least be able to get to bios with just the ram and the complete mobo. I normally power cycle a pc with just that to make sure I have bios.

No video out has me stumped, I'll have to think on that for a bit.

LCD's are easy to change, but with no external video signal, I would not change out the LCD yet.

I would get another mobo, you should be able to get to bios, even with an external monitor connected.

A word to the wise for others reading this, use a laptop cooler and keep your laptop cool.

I know I haven't been much help, but will ask some of my buddies at work.

    I love computers......

      Thanks for the reply,

Due to the recent Migration of our site to a dedicated SERVER with our Host, we lost about a weeks worth of posts...there were several to this thread as you can see the original date of the first post!?

I have since found out that the original fried MObo apparently took out the RAM with it, both the 2Gb and 1 GB chips were fried, tried them in my laptop, they take the same DDR2 PC-5300 667Mhz 200 Pin Dimm chips, and they wouldn't work, NO BOOT on the known good laptop. I also tried the known good chips in the suspect laptop...still no boot, no video on LCD or VGA output, so I'm pretty sure that the refurbished Mobo is bad, and will be requesting a replacement! I had also replaced the CPU suspecting that it may have gotten fried with the Original dead Mobo...still no boot! Like you said, with HD and DVD not connected....just power light around On button comes on, but no beeps, even without Ram!

Is the cooling fan running? I believe Acer's have to have the cooling fan running in order to boot up. I'm looking at one right now that is not booting and the techie at the local shop said to the owner that the fan needed replacing and that is why it wouldn't boot. I don't know this for sure, but just passing along another possibility.

I have 20 or so sticks of assorted SO-DIMMs laying around, but no DDR2 larger than 512MB.

One of these days I need to take all the old computer equipment I have amassed to a recycling center.

              Checking back in

              TC,

Glad to see you got it handled. Once you get all the parts, you will have a new laptop for your friend.
