  • Etiquette question

I have always looked up a person's profile to use their proper name in a reply but on another list I was called for doing that.
So what is considered proper in replying to a post?
"Hi Schitzabryk69" from their header or "Hi Clarence" from their profile?

    Fred,

I try to always use the name if its in the profile, if they hid it (maybe for good reason) then I use the alias.

Don't flippin' worry about it - its YOUR response!

I use the forum name for the most part, even when the real name is available. Kinda keeps in the spirit of the forum and our comarderie, if you will.

I know, mine is boring as heck but it's from before I started hanging out here and becoming COOL...

Sure wish there was the ability to change to a new screen name...

I'd say, if they didnt want anyone to know or use their real name then that should not have put it in their profile information that is available to the public...

Personally I would rather people use my forum name when addressing me on the site. The members names and other info are not available to lurkers who may be up to no good. I also believe that, say for instance Fred replies to my post and calls me Rasputin, that people who are following a thread will understand who he is addressing. If he suddenly says "hey Doug you are wrong on this issue" the followers do not know which post he is referring too.
A PM is a different thing and I welcome the use of my name, but for responding to a post I would like my forum name to be mentioned instead. Just my opinion.

"The Bonz" has been with me for a long time, and Bonz is right behind it. Yeah I'd make the change if I knew it was a reality to do on the forum.

Do I need to get a petition signed by 25 board members or something like that?

First, life as I know has changed forever, Fred cares.....and even about hurting someones feelings!!

Fred, I have always noticed that you do look up their name, and I have always given you a lot of credit for making that effort. As others have stated, it is a public profile. If your that worried about someone knowing your double secret identity, you may want to rethink joining a public forum, and putting your real identity in the public profile. I see nothing wrong with you using their given name that they list in the profile.

As for changing your screen name, I have seen from time to time where a site administrator has changed screen names for folks. It is on a special request basis, as it can only be done by an admin.
Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.

On the first reply I will weave in their name if they put it in their signature cause I figure it is then public knowledge. If I am exchanging PMs with someone I definitely look up their name to get more personal.

Aside from that......what difference should it make?

Maybe you guy's are just getting the wrong read on what Fred was really trying to do. He was trying to establish a proper proticol. Probably so that when he really was trying to get under your skin you would really know it.

Like he said he wouldn't want to do it accidentally.
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.
