  • New member intro as the XS-11 became my 12th bike.

New member here, someone gave me a -79 XS-11 Special free of charge with a good title. Only needs new intake rubber for carbs (Between cyl. and carb) Rebuild brakes and some cleaning and elbow grease, and she should be ready.....was about 38k miles on er.

    I've had a break from riding since 2009, when I t-boned a deer @ 55Mph

Look forward to pickin some brains here in the process of getting this old girl back on the road.

Hi Ron ! Glad you made it through the dear and getting back on again !

Had a bud hit a 12 point at 55 at 11PM. coming home from work. He woke up standing on the side of the road talking to the Sheriff, had no idea what he was saying before he realized what he was doing, did not know what happened. Deer was ready for skinning and quartering. He called me and gave me both his 79 and 81 Specials, fixed both just fine.

Welcome aboard ! Glad to hear it's not your first bike.XS11's do not work well for new riders IMHO.If the bike hasn't been ridden in a while the carbs will probably need attention.See the tech forums.Keep the rubber side down. Terry

Thanks for the welcome guys, oh.....I have probably 80k miles on motorcycle all and all......from KZ550, KZ1100, ZZ-R1200...then my Vtwin era, Vulcan 1600 and the bike that I miss the most -99 1500 Drifter. Sold to pay bills after deer crash (Crashed on a a -98 KTM RXC 620).

I'll go down and shoot some pics of this old girl.....she hasn't been running for 4-5 years......and needs some cleaning up. Carbs came pre disassembled for a lean condition at higher rpm's...cracks in boots fault. So that's one puzzle I've to do......re assemble them, and pray all parts are still in each individual ziplock bag.

                  Hey there SilverEagle,

The intake boots are often cracked on the outside, but they are double walled, so most of the time they are NOT cracked all the way thru, so just wanted to mention this so you might not ASSUME you've solved the high speed lean problem! Does the bike have any mods..intake or exhaust? It may not be jetted properly?

What size are the main jets? Inspect the vac. slide diaphragms for pinholes.
Other vac. leak sources can be the rubber caps for the intake boot synch ports. Even the intake boot to head interface. The Rubber hardens and can leak there as well. Also, if the PO cleaned the carb bodies by soaking them in caustic carb cleaner, the butterfly shaft seals can be damaged and leaking.

There's a nice pictorial tech tip on the carb tear down and cleaning which you may find helpful.

Yeah, photos can help us help you by letting you know what looks stock, what's not, etc.!

It has the stock intake box and boots.........problem was it supposedly had carb work done before. But it would lose power in higher rpms.......I suspect it was a wannabe shadetree mechanics that charged previous owner $400 for bogus work. I will see when I start the assembly work. Right now I have an 05 Yamaha Bruin 350 atv doing top end rebuild on before I start tearing into the troubleshooting/assembly portion. But I'm excited......look forward to drive an inline four motorcycle again. Hard to beat the pleasure and smoothness.

If it's losing power in the higher rpms, then it may just be the diaphrams. If they've done carb work on it, then it may have the wrong sized jets in it and they may not have even looked at the diaphrams at all.
I just picked up 4 new ones off ebay for a little over $60. and now my bike flies thru the rpms.
