  • Accu-pressure caps??

Have any of you tried the valve stem caps that measure your air pressure, and warn you of low air pressure?
There are some on e-bay right now. Item # 2469124513.

I have been thinking about getting some. The stems are a real bear to get to on the rear rim of the XS, so I tend not to check pressures as often as I would like to. (something that I think about every time I feel ANY wobble while on the freeway)

    Thoughts??

I've seen those, but worry that it could produce a slow leak. I've had leaky valve stem cores before. Once the tire would hold air just fine until the tire got warm then it would slowly leak out. For my money, the less places for leaks ( air / oil / fuel ) the better.

I read an article somewhere that said that they tried a couple of brands of indicator caps, and came up with the result that they are not accurate and not durable. They break off and then the tire deflates, or they stop giving an indication that the tire is too soft.

Another thing, is that they are usually not available in the pressures that we need on bikes.

They are available in just about any pressure, I just don't know if I want to trust them.
Maybe just a better pressure gauge to check my tires is the answer.
The 3 different gauges that I have, ALL have trouble reaching the valve stem on the rear wheel.
Is there something that you guys have found that works well for this?

          stick guage

i have found the trucker or 4x4 guages with the dual end work well. i can hook the end back onto my xj without the barrell hitting the spokes.

I use them. I like them. Now I know my pressues are right . . . EVERY time I ride . . . not just the once a month I finally got around to checking before . . .

They are not going to break . . . the body is metal, the viewing lense is some sort of plastic. I was going to break one and see if it leaked if the plastic was broken, but could not crush it with a pair of pliers. Could have smashed it with a hammer, but what would that simulate? That I ran the bike into a brick wall?

They have an "o" ring to seal to your valve-stem . . . I cannot imagine them coming unscrewed enough to leak . . . I mean, really, how many valve caps have you had spontaneously come unscrewed?

Anyway, they cost 5 bucks . . . can be bought individually so you can get the pressures you would want in your front and rear . . . they ship rapidly (good service), I had mine in 3 days.

They work fine. I'll report on duribility when I get back from Alaska . . . that'll probably be about 10,000 miles + whatever I put on in the meantime (did 500 yesterday).

I will replace mine every few tire changes . . . after-all we do all replace our valve-stems regularly too right!

As for coming unscrewed? That is on the bottom of my list of things to worry about . . . right below my axle nut falling off. It just ain't gonna happen unless somebody does it.

No interest in the company, yada yada . . . I just like the product . . . and figured some first-hand experience might be good to interject.

I have worked in auto repair for quite a few years and have seen these on many cars, some are accurate, most aren't even close. Have seen a few leak. I use a good gauge and leak-proof steel caps. I have seen too many tires overheat and fail because of low pressure, and it is no fun on a bike!
