Just a question from a guy (who has avoided cold climates as much as possible) for those of you snowbound up north...do people ride snowmobiles in the streets after a heavy snow? I doubt many are street legal, as no one would want to put a plate and brakelight on one, but do folks roam around the neighborhood when it comes down heavy?

The only time you can legally ride in the road (in NY) in the direction of traffic is when a state of emergency has been declared, otherwise its illegal. Riding on the side of the road between trails is ok and done quite often. There has to be a good heavy base of snow in order to be able to turn on pavement. Two years ago two people were killed when they decided to go riding through a small town in the road during a heavy snow with out helmits and crashed into a vehicle... stupid decision and ended up paying the ultimte price. When the conditions are right road riding is a blast.

I have almost given up all hope here as it snowed today for a bit. Yesterday was 6 months since the first snowfall. Hope the forecast is true for next week as that should finish winter. Street sweepers just showed up 3 days ago to get all the sand and pea gravel of the streets so it will still be tricky where that is spread.

Had 8 inches of snow last Tuesday, today it is supposed to be 60 degrees and sunny. Spring in the Rockies is that way. Have been out on a few rides (382 miles so far) but not yet commuting to work.

Snowmobiles on roads...
Depends. My tiny town allows ATVs on city streets to get to the nearby Wild Horse Mesa. Have seen snowmobiles on streets from time to time after heavy snow and the police don't seem to mind. I don't ride my Mountain Max 700 snowmobile in town, but do ride ride my Grizzly 550 ATV from my driveway into the boonies around here, even on milder winter days.

Both toys have their (current) registration stickers on them. Each costs about $25.00 per year to register. Would probably get stopped if they had non-current registration, particularly the ATV in town.

In town, yes. Riding happens mostly before the town gets out and plows the roads. After than, well, traffic and snowmobiles don't mix. Just outside of town, though, are a few Off Road Vehicle roads, no winter maintenance, and generally the gendarmes don't care what you do out there. Often turn into impromptu drag strips, but beware of the barb-wire fencing on either side....

Keep in mind I live in a rural area that tends to be pretty lax unless you damage property, then the brown stuff hits the fan. Town is listed at 451 people, no restaraunts, a 2-pump convenience store is about the only business around. We did recently get a recycle dumpster from the County. I can load up my recycleables on my 8N Ford and drive it over to the dumpster and get waved at by the other locals. Then I can drive over to the Post Office - middle of "downtown" - and everyone thinks that is cool. No house-to-house mail delivery; the Post Office gives everyone a free PO Box to receive mail. I do have a Slow Moving Vehicle emblem on the back of the 8N which keeps these jaunts legal.

Boonies for sure, has drawbacks, but law enforcement leaves you pretty much alone unless you are causing damage to proptery. I have been pulled over a couple times, speeding in a 20mph zone, but have never received a ticket. Bike bias...I've seen ATVs with kids on them speeding in the same areas, but some cops just like to hassle bike riders.

I plow sidewalks with a garden tractor and blade, after the stops I quit plowing in front of the cop's house. Skipped it, did houses on either side. Did that for a couple of years, have not been stopped since so last season I started plowing again. You can get away with that in a small town where the cops live in your neighborhood.



Had the bike out for a ride last Sunday, this morning there is fresh snow on the hills on the way to work. Supposed to be in the 70s by this weekend with lows in the 40s. Good riding weather if it happens.
