An evap code will ONLY be set if there is an air leak or some other malfunction in the evaporative system. A stuck or leaky EGR will set a lean code or a random misfire code. A weak fuel pump would set those same codes also.

What has that got to do with an evap code?

What problem did replacing the IAC solve?

Check for a loose gas cap. You can throw that code AND be hard to start.

#1: hit up nicoclub.com and do a forum search. Tons of knowledge over there.
#2: your MAF connector is a weak point. Had the same issue with a Q45. The cam/crank sensor connector is another weak point. Jiggle vigorously and inspect for loose wires and corrosion.

Nico is a great abundance of knowledge on anything Nissan. Saved me hours on my Q45, which has a few things in common with the Max. Electrical connector issues are very common on 90's Nissan products. As are fuel injector issues. Doesn't sound like an injector for your problem as they usually just fail altogether causing a miss.

ok, update is due. i've changed the starter to a new one, replaced the fuel filter (hadn't ever been changed, still had the original in it ) took out the IAC and cleaned it (i think i'm going to try that again shortly though.) checked the MAF with a couple different tests and cleaned it, made sure the fuel pump is working, visually inspected the vacuum lines and just purchased a mityvac to actually test them out. then i got some seafoam in the tank, just in case it helps in some way. i also double checked the gas cap. been on tight the whole time. replaced the engine coolant temperature sensor, checked my battery voltage, and all the other minor things you check when a car isn't starting correctly. symptoms are now a bit different, no noticeable amount of gas coming out of the exhaust, starting is easier when the car is warm, but still rough and i have to tap on the accelerator to get it going. have to tap the accelerator a couple times and crank several times when its cold. engine codes are still there, even after clearing. the car runs and drives fine, the only known issues are the bearing for the tensioner on the serpentine belt is starting to go out and the muffler is attached to the exhaust by a soup can and radiator clamps. i also may have set the idle a bit lower when i cleaned the IAC. next things i am planning on doing include cleaning or possibly eliminating the EGR, fixing the tensioner, and just slowly as i get the money replacing O2 sensors and other critical sensors in the car. any other ideas you guys may have are much appreciated.

hey BA80, what website did you get that procedure off of? i would love to check it out and see the pictures they have.
