  • Some serious engineering in Germany!

    Hey Folks,

I was perusing the photobucket xs1100 pix trying to find the photoalbum for Widowmaker/John in Hampton, and came across this image, hope it shows here, but it's the only one, since he moved all of his other images. IF he'll post a link to his album, I can copy/edit his posts to put the photos back into his build thread.

But below was the intriguing photo...as stated some serious engineering going on here....I tried searching the net for more info or other photos but no luck! Allegedly it's a TRIKE in Germany!?

Now that I'm more awake, looking at the bottom of the picture, you can see what looks like a large oil hose looped just below it, like it comes off of an oil cooler rig, but there's no radiator attached...at least not in this photo...perhaps just looped for testing??? I would think/hope that the turbo device is oil cooled...aren't they all, or are some air cooled???

Turbo's, the size that we deal with, are oil cooled. And they take a lot of oil. And the return oil line is about twice the size of the supply, due to frothing of the oil as it goes through the bearing.
The housings are air cooled, and my question was, that since the turbo is out front of the engine, all the heat from it goes back to the engine fins, and they are hotter than usual, due to the turbocharging, and the heat load is getting right on up there, with no additional finning in sight.

Yep, I wonder how it cools.

The down side to the trike is it looks like he is setting up to suck through a carb. I would have set up an FI system, and pressure feed it with the air. But, to each his own, and with the turbo as far in front of the engine as it is, the cooling probably will NOT be a big issue.
