Ouick question Bill. That is a Vetter 5 right?
Is there holes going to the interior of your fairing behind the grates by your turn signals?Greg

I am guessing it was more for looks than any thing functional,I like the looks of the Vetter better than what Yamaha had at the time and I put mine on in I think '81.....and it sure beats my original set up
With my style of riding which is casual and stop to look and see I think the Vetter was a perfect match for the XS...
My original set up...

My IV had the slots by the turn signals because the horns were mounted right behind them. I did not have any foam there just the slots.
For whatever reason no water ever came in those slots, I watched carefully after I discovered them and not one drop of rain ever got in the fairing. I am not sure why that is but perhaps the air pressure builds up and prevents that from happening.
My V on the other hand has neither the slots nor anywhere to mount the horns, maybe this was an option? The Old Tamer

If there are more than three bolts holding it on there, it is most likely a very important part!

Sorry to hijack your thread Bill but I'm gonna keep it up.
Mine is just like yours Bill ( and Gary ) but behind those slots on the inside of the turn signals is a round hole about 1 1/2" in diameter that I can look into and see inside the fairing.
They would HAVE TO scoop up air, rain, and bugs and dump them into the inner cavity. I contemplated putting the horns (automotive style) in there but I didn't want all the afore mentioned crap getting scooped up in them.Greg

Greg,
I just braved the cold (-27 here) and went out to the shed to look. My V DOES have the slots and hole just as you are describing, there are no horn mounts there though as the IV has. A close inspection shows that although there is a certain amount of bug residue on the area there is NO trace of it inside the fairing at all and same as on the IV I have never seen any trace of water inside the V either. I still don't know how that is possible but it works. Put whatever you want in there, it will be safe. The Old Tamer

Well then, maybe I'll figure a way to mount those horns in there then. I could put my oil cooler back on where the horns are mounted now.Greg

I will have to look at my fairing to see exactly what you are talking about but the bike and I are now separated at the hip...I mounted the factory horns right to the frame...kinda hard to see in pic...
Will try and have a look when I get back to the shop in a day or two.'80 XS1100 SG

That is where they are mounted and the fairing bracket is mounted where the oil cooler used to be but I had to take off the stock horn bracket to get the fairing bracket mounted.
But, the new fairing bracket has mounts for the oil cooler but the new horns are in the way.
Catch 22. I can have 2 of any combination but not all 3 the way it's set up. The only option is find another place for the horns.Greg

Let me see if I got this straight in my head>>>>

You don't want to take the chance that a small amount of something would get into the fairing and plug up the horns so you mount them way out in the front of everything. You better bring it up here to ride this week. With these temps there are damn few bugs out there and for sure there is NO water in the wet form. The Old Tamer

Let me see if I can put it into terms you can understand Gary.
I don't want the interior of the fairing to get wet or filled with indigenous insects nor do I wish the same fate for the horns.
Simply was inquiring as to whether the holes were a factory option and if so what their purpose was.
As for coming up there close to the Arctic Circle, that is out of the question particularly in this season. Only people with masochistic tendancies would be there.Greg

As far as I know the holes are there to let the noise of the horns out of the fairing and into the ears of whatever idiot is in front of you.
I have been out in some nasty weather and like I said there has been no evidence of anything getting inside of either fairing. My left fairing pocket has the "soft" cover on it and you can see it puff up as soon as you start to move at any rate of speed indicating a build up of pressure inside the fairing. I am thinking that this internal pressure is what prevents any moisture or debris from entering the holes. I once partially unsnapped the left cover to get out a pair of gloves while I was under way and found out that it was pretty difficult to get it snapped back shut until I slowed down. The IV has a pair of brackets that hold a couple of horns (Fiam brand) that look very much like yours but are maybe just a tad bit smaller. The V does not have those brackets installed nor does it have the horn relay as part of its internal wiring which makes me think that they may have been an option. The Old Tamer
