  • Got a buck

Well, I got a buck late this afternoon. Literally, a buck as in animal with antlers!! Heading home @ 60mph -then- here he comes WOT across 4 lane divided highway. Either I nailed him - POW - right in the hind quarter (rear leg & butt) as he was running -or- more likely his hoof made contact with the headlight as he was trying to do some "High Steppin" to avoid some hurt. I'm not exactly sure. (I had the carbs off the XS today for cleaning and installing ACCT), so luckily I was on the G-Wing. So either Mr Deer kicked out or hit the outer 1/2 of the right side headlight assembly and took out a small chunk of the right cowl. Weird it didn't hit the right mirror or do anything to the front fender. Headlight assembly is $196 and I might just speed tape over the air vent intake since the right cowl panel is a bit pricy.

I went back and picked up a couple of parts that popped out along with the debris. I've ridden 250,000 miles and never done that before, thankfully. Was always worried about dog or something smaller. Glad I was on the 900 lb. Wing and going 60. Other than the noise of breaking plastic I didn't feel any impact which is weird. Bike is fine other than outer high beam side of the headlight all busted. I think the bike lifted the deer off his feet then his butt hit the outer part of the headlight assembly or he was "High Steppin" to avoid impact. I had the brakes ON and he almost cleared. The impact knocked him down and he was laying on the ground looking at me like wtf dude. When I turned around and went back, he was gone.

That's my excitement today. At least I was able to motor home safely without any further incident from cars. Hope it is not too late for Santa to bring me some parts. Hope deer is ok.

              Glad You're OK

ANY hit with an animal at hwy speed that you're able
to drive home without making personal contact with the pavement would be considered a very lucky thing indeed...
The worst mistake most people make is trying to swerve to avoid the hit
and then upon contact they are leaning and all hell breaks loose.
Always keep the bike straight and brake as hard as possible and right before contact release the brakes and make the hit straight-up (I know this is hard to do, but IT WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE)
I speak from personal experience, and if I hadn't followed this tip, I would of been long gone over 30 yrs ago

Yes, this is just about the exact view I had a millisecond before hitting the buck @ 60mph as he ran across the road in front of me left to right. The buck I hit was a tad smaller. I'm now sure I must have hit his back leg then his butt hit my headlight and right side panel on the fairing. I was more than lucky not to have T-boned the thing or gotten messed up with the antlers. That would have been real ugly, painful and expensive. I've seen people on bikes hit things (like guard rail) that bent the forks into the engine which results in an immediate uncontrollable splat on the pavement (in the oncoming lane in a curve). Not good .....

BTW: I have driven up I-71 a couple times this year Cincinnati - Columbus - Mansfield and have never seen a place with so many deer hits on the highway. "Boat load of deer" is certainly correct. Some places like a carcass per every 1/2 mile. Guess all that corn with a lot of woodlands all over is the big draw for those mega large deer populations in OH. I wouldn't expect to clobber a deer like I did driving around Atlanta but along the Chattahoochee River there are a lot of deer with few hunters anymore.

Very blessed this was only a $500, no injury encounter. Replacement bike parts should arrive in a couple weeks.

Deer and bikes do not mix.
Around here I have been very lucky on the bike..came close a time or three but I am very alert to what is going on around me but I just about soiled my pants while staying in Utah on a day ride in the mountains when a moose? guess they have moose, there he was standing in the middle of the road on a tight curve in the mountains..he jumped I braked...I don't know who scared who more but I can at least still talk about it.....I have never forgot that.
