I have 2 daughters who are 9 and 12. I know first hand how the shows geared toward their age group are cast mostly with girls who are thin/fit and how they portray it to be normal. I see it as a double edged sword. Girls who are overweight and out of shape feel even worse about themselves but I think it also encourages girls who are thin/fit to stay that way.
I usually do the grocery shopping and take them with me. I've taught them to pay attention to the nutrition labels as well as comparing product price. They do a great job and already know what's good for you and what's not. The only time they don't look at the nutrition label is when it's something we always buy.
However, I refuse to take them shopping for clothes. What seems to be the in thing now is what a hooker would wear back when I was their age. Last time I took them shopping for clothes, about all they heard from me was no, no, no, oh hell no!
