I have 2 daughters who are 9 and 12. I know first hand how the shows geared toward their age group are cast mostly with girls who are thin/fit and how they portray it to be normal. I see it as a double edged sword. Girls who are overweight and out of shape feel even worse about themselves but I think it also encourages girls who are thin/fit to stay that way.
I usually do the grocery shopping and take them with me. I've taught them to pay attention to the nutrition labels as well as comparing product price. They do a great job and already know what's good for you and what's not. The only time they don't look at the nutrition label is when it's something we always buy.

However, I refuse to take them shopping for clothes. What seems to be the in thing now is what a hooker would wear back when I was their age. Last time I took them shopping for clothes, about all they heard from me was no, no, no, oh hell no!

        Girls

I have three daughters, olderst is turning nineteen tommorrow, 17 and 15. I take them shopping for the staple cloths, jeans, boots, shoes and coats. SWMBO does the rest. They haven't got into the hooker look yet because I'd turn the works of them around before they got in the door.
There is a lot to be said about family genes. I have two half brothers, well one now as the other died a few years back very suddenly. Thats when we all got tested for the same thing that killed him. That's also when we found out we all were from different fathers. Go figure. Anyway, on my dads side, everyone seems to live to 85 no matter what the lifestyle is. I asked the heart specialist about that and she stated simply, that families seem to have clock. The number of ticks on that clock seem to be predetermined. Lifestyle plays a huge role in the quality of life you have during the clocks ticking but genes are the dominent facor for longevity excluding accidents and suicide of course. I remember the first time I saw her, she was ready to call an ambulance after checking my BP. It was 104/54 with a pulse rate of 44. I said that soiunds about right for me, she said it was way below normal, dangerously low. She had me in for doppler's on my heart every year for six years after that then finally agreed that I didn't fit into their charts and graghs too well. I checked my BP this morning after I came home from dropping my kids off and it was still 104/57.
My point in starting this thread was not to get down on people in general. I don't get out in crowds too much and I was just alarmed at the high percentage of obese people. Over weight is one thing, thats not what I was refering to. I'm talking about obesity here. As we get older we lose bone and muscle mass, it's part of aging. All the injuries we've sustained when younger come back and haunt us when over the age of, say fifty. This also impedes are ability to maintain fitness. But the people I saw were under fifty and not only were they obese but so were their kids. And what up with the speedo's and bikini's. If the only sunlight that can be see between your legs is between your ancles, don't wear a bikini or speedo. Although with quite a number it was hard to determine if they had any fabric on below the waist at all.

Let Darwin's theory do it's thing

I was raised in WW2 England where you cleaned your plate at every meal "because the wicked Germans are torpedoing the poor sailors who bring this food to us"
Apparently this also applied to the carrots and spuds out of our own back yard.
So I still find it difficult to stop eating while there's still food on my plate.
Which is why my perfect musculature is modestly hidden under my body fat, unlike those exhibitionists one sees on the jogging trails.
          But it's all voluntary.
Nobody is forced to over-eat. Nobody is forbidden to exercise. Everybody knows that being overweight and out of shape will lead to an earlier grave.
And any male person can figure out that if you lose 2Pi inches off your waistline there's an extra inch of wang available for deployment.
I tell myself this every day.

One bullet would be cheaper. If they consider that inhumane, drug his last meal so he dies in his sleep.
