  • It's all in the mind.

OK, I have a morbid fear of heights but riding with no helmet don't bother me at all. I don't do it for fear of getting a ticket plus I know it ain't safe, but like I say, it don't bother me. OTOH there's no law against riding with no gloves but the times I've done that I've ridden with a terrible fear of getting skinned knuckles in a crash.
Now yesterday I found something new to get scared by.
We'd tickets to a show and my wife drives after dark because my night vision ain't what it was. Starting out just on time and the Buick's passenger side seat belt jammed part way out. Wouldn't pull out far enough to latch, wouldn't retract far enough to re-set itself.
I had to ride to the show and back without using the seat belt.
I was totally terrified the entire trip.

Or the helmet.. Definatley wear the helmet in the car next time.

And just for comparison.. I'm terrified riding in the car with my wife.. or ANYONE. lol. On long trips, I've tried to let someone else drive so I could close my eyes for a bit, but it's worthless. Can't stay awake to drive and can't relaxe enough to sleep.

Fred this is a programmed part of your mental makeup. I was a cop in the 1970s and have seen what no seat belt can do to the human body. The gore was incredible. In your situation I would be just as terrified as you were but I would tell the wife not to start until I got in the back seat and used the belt back there!

          Hi Jack,
there's only lap belts back there besides being a bitch to fasten.
And I never thought of doing so.
My wife's solution was that I should hold the diagonal across my body so that the cops would think I was wearing the belt.
Only cop we saw was attending some damn fool who'd skidded into a median guard rail.
Here in Saskatchewan we have the same climate as central Russia and still we have drivers who you'd swear had never seen snow before.
But the good news is that I fixed the seat belt!
          No more terror tours!

            all in the mind

fred, at your age you're to be commended for just being able to use what mind you have left and i'm sure that the local constabulary appreciates the fact that you care about driving safety. after all, they,ve seen you pilot your hack around...

Come on Fred, don't give me that BS about the lap only seat belt. If you had thought about it, you would have been in the back seat in a flash. Pay back time for all the back seat drive you endured over the years. With your wit, you would have the poor woman crying before you got out of the driveway!!!!

Fred, that's funny. How can you even ride a motorcycle? I have thoughts like that all the time as I drive down the road on the bike....but I usually see things before they happen that way.
