According to the recently-released National Insurance Crime Bureau’s 2011 Motorcycle Theft and Recovery report, 46,667 bikes were reported stolen in 2011, down 6 percent from 49,791 reported stolen in 2010.

Although overall thefts waned in 2011, motorcycle sales slightly increased. Citing the Motorcycle Industry Council, NICB reports that sales increased in 2011 to 440,899 units compared to the 439,678 units sold the year prior.

The five motorcycle makes that were targeted the most by thieves, with their thefts accounting for 35,304, or 76 percent, of the total thefts.

    1 - Honda - 11014
    2 - Yamaha - 8880
    3 - Suzuki - 7281
    4 - Kawasaki - 5009
    5 - Harley Davidson - 3120

The NICB report also tracked on which days motorcycles were most likely to be stolen. While the most active day for thefts was Monday with 6,962, there was a relatively even spread across the week with the least active day, Sunday, posting 6,422 thefts.

The report also looked at what time of year motorcycle thefts occured. Last year, states logged the highest number of robberies during the warm months of July and August, with 5,544 and 5,397, respectively. On the other end of the thermometer, the cooler months of February and December witnessed the fewest thefts with 2,147 and 2,475, respectively.

The top five U.S. states with the most reported thefts are California (5,927), Texas (3,950), Florida (3,927), North Carolina (2,466), and Indiana (2,114).

The U.S. motorcycle theft rate averages out to one theft every 11 minutes. Industry experts speculate the fact that many bikes are not equipped with adequate theft-deterrence technology is fueling the problem.

Advance Auto sells a disc brake lock made by Master for $22. I now use it every day, including when it's in my garage. The only way they are getting that bike out is picking it up and dragging it!

I guess if I want to minimize the likelyhood of someone stealing my bike, I should go get a Harley.

If you go get a Harley, the dealer will be stealing from you! I've got nothing against Harley's, they just cost too much. To me it's just logical to spend half as much on a metric and get a more reliable bike. Even if it's more likely to get stolen.

A couple cheap options I'd suggest is hit the kill switch and turn your gas off just to slow them down. If someone don't know bikes that good it might help.
Not fool proof but couldn't hurt.

Still the same old misinformation.. Yes, a HD product will cost more, but not twice as much for a comparable model (and most HD dealers are thieves, but many metric dealers are too) but can be cheaper to own over the long haul. They hold their resale value better, are just as reliable these days, and parts are far cheaper (particularly if you shop around a bit) as well as being easier to get and with a bigger variety.

Most bikes stolen are "lifted" , several get out of a van and actually pick up your bike and put it into the van. Locking the wheel or dissabling the ignition does not really do much stop them, though it will slow down other theives. A friend of mine had his Harley stolen and saw a group lift his bike into a van and leave in less than a minute. There was nothing he could do.
Slow down and enjoy life. If you are in that much of a hurry, you should have left eariler.

That's what I was wondering. All the simple tricks and kill-switch anti-theft methods are fine for the thief who tries to hop on and ride away, but how many are actually stolen that way?

I accidentally left my key in the ignition two days in a row at the technical school I work at which is populated by 1400 -18 to 25 year old young men. No one took it.

I left my gas tank open with the keys in it in downtown Milwaukee once. Didn't get stolen, but I don't ever want to do it again.

                          Yea! We're number one!!!

                          Who would have guessed.

Really something to be proud of. Just like everything else out here.

Except the weather, and the premium is getting too high... even for that.

Well, to be fair, about twelve percent of Americans are Californians, so we should have the lion's share of thefts.

I left my bike in a Walmart parking lot for a weekend, hoping to cash out the insurance. I went back Monday night and it was still there, with a $10 bill stuck between the seat and tank....
