  • Drill Press

I need your talent with machinery. I have an old drill press made in Tiwan about 30 years ago. The chuck wabbles about .025 in. I have checked the spindle with a dial indicator setup and it is less than .002in out. But the indicator shows that the chuck, which is held on the spindle with a Jacobs taper #3, is .025 out of center. I tried shim stock without any improvement and I am not sure what to do next. One thing, I don't have the money to spend on a machine shop solution. The fix must be something I can do at home. I have a lot of tools and some machine shop experience but no lathe or milling machine. Thanks for reading.

Replace the chuck; that's not a big deal, and doesn't have to be expensive. Look here: http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INSRHI?PMSECT=0000001036
and select what you need/want. As long as the spindle bearings are good, a new chuck will do it....

I was having the same trouble with my drill press. Every time I cinched a bit down it would wobble but never the same.

A friend suggested that I should cough up a few extra dollars and get a ball bearing chuck. I bought a Jacobs. Rhom was out of my budget.

It acted like a new machine. Tracks perfect. Very smooth. Dont have to break your wrist to tighten a bit.

Worth a couple extra bucks in my opinion. (which isn't worth a couple bucks anyway)

I bought one of the import ball-bearing chucks, currently about $62 (Enco part number 290-1515). It's been in use for about 3 years now with no issues. Seem to be plenty heavy-duty (I've got it's near-twin on my lathe, and that one's seen some serious use) at much less than the 'name-brand' units. But it does pay to shop around or wait for a sale sometimes...

Without doing a bunch of research I'd be willing to bet that there isn't much difference between the two chucks at all. I just wished I had tossed the old chuck years earlier.

Anything is better than what came on the drill press I have.

As a matter of fact I bought my chuck from ENCO too.

Thank you guys, I knew you would come thru. I had dreamed that there might be some penniless and painless remedy out there, but the chuck replacement is the best practical answer. I have some scrap metal I am going to sell next week and will have enough to buy a new chuck. Thanks again, one and all.
