Sorry for the late reply, took off yesterday to help a friend paint his house.

    JeffH:
Thanks for the welcome, Time and Patience are two things I have plenty of.

    wa407mpp & natemoen:
As it is raining today and I am not getting much done, I went ahead and hit advance. Picked up battery cleaner, electronic cleaner, and a good size tube of dialectric grease. I figure I will do all of the connections on this one, then do all the connections on the gs450 since the headlight on it has been acting up.

    TC:
The headlight came on dim with the key, was able to test the filaments to make sure they worked and the switch still more or less worked. I'm used to other bikes I have worked on having the headlight come on with the key, so that's a nice piece of troubleshooting info to know.

The fuse blcok is non-existant, somebody replaced them all with inline fuses. I haven't pulled the tape yet to see if they were soldered or just wrapped together. I plan on fixing that at a later date. The bike is also missing the air cleaner, toolbox, center stand, octopus, and I will probably find more as I work on it.

I picked up a wix filter and some house brand 20w50 for the first fill. I used to use that and some atf for the first run to remove sludge, will try the mmo approach this time.

The person I will have look at it is a friend that just finished his hd/victory/s&s certification. He actually likes metric bikes more than the ones he learned on. Main reason I may have him look at it or at least look over my shoulder, is I have 0 experience with the air shocks and such, plus he has all the equipment to synch the carbs. I usually just took multicylinder bikes and converted them to single vw sidedraft carbs

I'll start a build thread, those go in the XS11/XJ11 Discussion forum, correct?

    BA80:
I figured it was something like that. I also was thinking corroded connections as Travis claimed to see 1 of the front signals flash when I first turned them on.

I have copies of the manuals from ringler's site. As for the oil, first fill is using house branded dino oil with no additives, after that I will probably switch over to rotella after the first fill has a chance to work.

    webbcraft2150:
Back when I had my cb550 bagger, I knew a guy with an xs1100.. I suffered severe bike envy at that point.

Glad I was finally able to find one at the right time and price. It was choice between this one, a running ninja, or a cb750 that was running. The other two had no title issues and were almost ready to go..

This one has a small title issue (person I bought it from never transferred it, but title was signed and dated in 2010), not running, not the best looker out of the choices. I managed to find the original seller and he has agreed to fill out and send me the transfer form, so title issue is pretty much solved. As for the non-running / and looks issues... I've been wanting an xs for a while, so I figure it will be worth the hassles in the end

      Trin,

I bought a parts bike a while back (these XS11s multiply like rabbits) so may be able to help you with some cheap parts from my stash. If you plan to work on it Saturday, I would like to come and meet you and check out your progress. PM me details.

BTW the 79 did not have air shocks, those are likely from an XJ1100, but a nice upgrade. I have a pair waiting to go on my new 81 build.

I am unsure exactly the harness differences from 79SF to 80SG, I suspect negligible, but if it looks to be too bad my parts bike is an 80 with a good harness. My 80 and 81 harnesses are both in good shape so I would just be saving it for future disasters.

There are only two other active San Antonio members and neither has wanted to come out and play so I am hopeful you are planning on being more social

There are some significant differences from 79 to 80. Plugs differences, locations differences.

Main parts I will be looking for are the service stand and maybe the switches. left switch has a broken high/low, right switch has broken run/stop. I may just add a toggle switch to get around the run stop switch for now, same with the high/low, depending on what i decide to do with the bike.

I will probably be working on it saturday unless it rains, brian kidnaps me to help paint again, or by some miracle it fires up before then. If it fires up before then, i may just be researching all weekend.

so the front end has been switched out as well... i believe the current bars are cafe racer style, i am used to leaning over my bikes a bit, so am comfortable with the change.

Not sure on the harnesses either.. very worst case scenario, I will build a harness for it. At that point I will probably be getting rid of all the nice extras like self cancelling signals, emergency lighting, etc.

I am a very social antisocial person Actually, I am hoping to get this one running well enough to do the valentines day massacre in hondo. No clue if that will happen or not, but I figure it gives me a date to aim for at the very least. I'd rather not borrow travis's harley, or take the gs450.

Well, except of course the front fork tubes with the air. If he means the rear shocks then yes that is correct info.

I think you are right Ras .... Pics show regular rear shocks so he must mean air in the front fork tubes.
