  • Rider's BIKE down

Poprock's bike is dead on I205 about 6 miles north of the bridge to Oregon. I'm going over to try and get his bike going but if there's any one in the area that could help, send me an eMail to technojock@yahoo.com and I'll get it on my phone.

I ended up renting a trailer and hauling him and the bike to my place. With a little luck, he'll ride it home tonight...

If he'd have kept his a$$ in Oklahoma, there'd have been several that could have helped him out. Tell him I said hello. And make him sharpen all your knives while you work on his bike.

He did and I do, Tod! I know y'all would have my back on the flat land. Tony is good company. My main power plug had fried itself. Tony replaced it and cleaned up some other stuff, as well as pointing out to me all the things I need to clean up in winter projects. I rode home over the coast range in the moonlight. It was a nice ride, the headlight was real bright, but the bike wouldn't make any power. I'm gonna check the pickup coil wires tomorrow. It stumbles badly on acceleration, smooths out on level ground. I rode all the way from Portland in 4th gear, 3rd gear over the summit.
Miss you guys, but riding out here is awesome. Went to the Oyster Run at
Anacortes on Sunday, came hove over Ranier. Fantastic scenery, great roads to ride and they just don't quit.

Glad you made it home, Dave.

Was the bike running well before it broke down? Sounds more like pickup coil wire problem starting. That's what my red bike started doing. We kept thinking spark plugs or bad gas since it would run fine on level, but get on it and sputtered and popped a lot. You can take off the left side cover and start it, then pull on those wires a bit and see if it dies.

I would start with the pick-up coil wires, but do not rule out coils. I was recently working on one that would idle reasonably fine, a sputter now and again. Tuned and synched and it stil would sputter now and then.

Take it out and as soon as it had load on the engine it would miss eratically. The more fuel you gave it, the worse the miss got. Check the pipes and all four even temp, reasonably hot. Checked pickup coils and bike died when you pulled on one wire, thought we had it, replaced the coils with a known good set I had laying around. No noticable change. Went through carbs several rounds, even replaced carbs with a set I had. No noticable change. Put new coils on it and it is like a new machine.

Pickup coil wires were my first thought. Thanks for giving me a quick check method. Coils are also suspect. I did surgery on them about 7 years ago and replaced the plug wires. Worked fine for a long time. Tonight I'll start it up and check for little blue flashing lights under the tank. Coils are an equal possibility, but pickup wires are the cheap fix so I'll start there.

You should post a pic of that melted stator plug. It's one of the worst I've ever seen.

Anyway if it's the coils, I have a couple 3 sets in my stash. We can talk more about this Monday...

Here's what awaited us behind the fuse plate. I had sprayed it with cleaner, but did not fill it with dielectric grease. Tony showed me how to do that. Going to clean up the ignition plug and the ignition switch next.
