I have a question for you military types. Do your medic's carry weapons? I'm specifically asking weather Sgt Chris Speer would have been armed during the time he was killed in Afganastan.

Combat medics have always been authorized under Geneva Convention and carry a sidearm for protecting their patients(and themselves). Carrying offensive support weapons is a delicate balance depending on the situation. Special Forces medics are always offensively armed.

Unfortunately no matter if you are armed or not you only know to return fire after you are fired upon. If the current enemy can identify you as an officer medic chaplain radioman etc you become a primary target for snipers. Medics have a hard time concealing their identity but god bless them. Most teams try to keep them in a more protected area for that reason. To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.
