Well after hearing about poor Cy and many other souls over the years I'm really thinking hard about passing on my Xs to someone else . The roads here are crazy and I have to go about an hour before I hit any decent two lane black top . Man I got cut off three times on the way home from the dentist twice by the same lady! I was freaked out in my cage

I'll say this... if I lived in any of my local urban areas and had to regularly ride certain areas, I'd probably quit riding. I rarely ride my bike into 'town' anymore, there's just too many idiots on the road anymore. It seems like any time I do go into 'town' in the cage, I'll see at least one accident (four wheeled type) and many of those would be pretty nasty if a bike had been involved. I know not all urban areas are the same, so the individual has to make that call depending on where they live. And let's face it, as we get older our reaction times get slower and while a savvy rider can compensate for that to a point, it only takes a split-second for some moron to run you over...
I know that Cy had remarked that he was having concentration issues after his prior accident, I hope that wasn't a contributing factor in this one.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

This is a serious subject though. When I got my first street bike cruiser, I only had it for 3 weeks when I already had 4 close calls that had nothing to do with me. I was almost killed. I was starting to think the universe had turned on me.
I had a pallet fall off the back of a truck in front of me, an alligator skin come off a truck and came flip flop (Romney) down the freeway at me, twice on a busy freeway people changed lanes and almost took me out, then the scariest moment was on a highway approaching a 2 way stop. I had the right of way and the speed limit was 65, so I slowed to around 60 and a woman cut right out in front of me at the last minute, I wouldn't have made it if she hadn't saw me last second and stopped. I went around the front of her. A truck immediately followed her and called the police. An officer pulled me over to make sure I was alright then went after her. He was pissed."The Hooligan" XJ1100, Virago Gauge Pods, Screaming Eagle Mufflers, K&N Filter, hand made rear fender, side covers, and solo seat, round bar conversion, small headlight, tail light, and cat eye turn signals, chip fuses, rewired the right way.

Garth, alot of folks choose to hang up the helmet while they raise their chitlins. I did the same thing. There will be plenty of time to put your knees back in the breeze when they are at the age they would rather you not be around anyway.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

There are times when you sometimes need to make a change and if you feel danger ridding then a change needs to be made. Some of us change where we ride or when we ride etc etc. Me I no longer ride at night and made that change many years ago after hitting bambi. Out on country roads they hide in the tall grass and remain there till they hear you comming and then step out to see what it is, so even ridding out of the cities can be a chalenge at times. I tried for a while but any little change in movement at night along the side of the road and I'd be on the brake which was making me dangerous. I definately respect you putting your family first and support what ever you do. You can still stay here and make fun of the rest of us.To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

every rider i know has a story about close calls. sadly it goes with the territory. i've had 2 and i count myself as one of the very lucky ones. 40 years ago in denver a cop ran through a red light and hit me broadside. i was unhurt and the bike suffered minimal damage. 5 years ago a brain dead soccer mom on her cell phone went through a red light and hit my new gl1800. again, after flying through the air a bit i was unhurt, bike was totaled. i'm now convinced that i am not going to die on a motorcycle. if my next "incident" is going to be another 35 years from now i'll be long gone anyway(i'm 63)

If you are uncomfortable riding then by all means get off the bike but if you getting off it because you are afraid of what MIGHT happen you had better stop doing a lot of other things too. There are things that are just as dangerous as riding that we do every day without even thinking about it. And we don't enjoy them as much.
If you live in fear of what might happen you will live to regret what could have been.Greg
