I'm looking at a Lee Valley 1x42 belt sander to be used in a commercial knife sharpening application. Are they as good as they look in the pictures? Thanks for any information you can share.

Lee Valley only sells good quality stuff so no worries there.
But is using any belt sander to sharpen knives a good idea?
Axes for sure, machetes even, but a knife edge needs to be hollow ground
and a belt sander's belt won't do that because the best you can hope for is the belt stays flat and don't try to make a convex edge on the blade.
Lee Valley also markets electric wet stone wheels that'd work for you.Fred Hill, S'toon

Just make sure you get good belts. The belts will be what makes the difference."Liars and panderers in government would have a much harder time of it if so many people didn't insist on their right to remain ignorant and blindly agreeable.” -Bill Maher
