I'm working with Garmin baseCamp. 4.0 I believe it is the latest version. When I open the map section it has a split line that I can move to make it look like 1 map but is is 2 maps what would be the purpose for this? can this be removed?

I'm not sure of that model but I'm thinking one side is for local/streets etc. and the other is for larger map area the you can shrink and expand to suit your need. I'm sure theres a way to turn it off so one side works and expands to full screen. I've used Tomtom and really like all the options.
If you dont have directions try google.

Yes, Base Map 4.0.1 is the latest version. On the Top Tool Bar click "VIEW".

Is Map Product: City Navigator NT North America 2012.3
      Is Map Views: OVERVIEW MAP
      Is Map Controls: AUTO

My Base Map screen has the LIBRARY and ROUTE on the left, then Rest of Screen is MAP (where I can scroll or zoom In or Out and see the details) then little expanded view Window Map in the upper right.

Not sure that helps, but you can configure the VIEW to what you want. Maybe your MAP VIEWS are set to BOTH?
